Lord of Bunwich
You know what this is going to be. There are a few problems with Wildfires: Wildfire checks are very frequent, with a high chance to fail, meaning they require constant vigilance to prevent but can lure you into a false sense of security. Smoldering can be very subtle, and the object chosen by the Wildfire might be on the edge of the screen or obscured. A single Wildfire can unexpectedly annihilate hours of progress, especially if one strikes a docked Boat while you are leaving it. The only way to completely prevent Wildfires is with Above Average Trees and Flingomatics, with Scaled Flooring only minimizing the damage. In short, Wildfires are not telegraphed enough to be as difficult to prevent as they are, even if the damage they can do is sometimes quite limited. I like the concept of wildfires. But the specifics of it are too annoying to deal with for me to do anything besides disable it. Ideas: More properly telegraph when and where wildfires occur, preferably by restraining them to some kind of Solar Flare event or just giving them a more obvious indicator, like a sound ^ It's possible to tie the Event into the world Wetness system, such that you can tell when your world will experience Wildfires by seeing if the Rainometer is bottomed out Restrain Wildfires to objects with a maximum flammability threshold (e.g. withered grass or loose items) as opposed to being random, similar to how it currently prioritizes Lureplants. Items and objects resistant enough to Fire would simply never be targeted by a Wildfire despite being flammable. Make Scaled Flooring prevent Wildfires (like please it's so close to being useful) If you space out your base so that not everything is densely packed, fires usually don't deal that much damage to your world (exceptions being plantables like Grass Tufts), but it feels more like you got randomly screwed over than you made a mistake, because usually what burned down was something that you never really had the chance to see smolder. Mike23Ua
This game and it’s single player counter-part that came before it was largely based on RNG, what spawned, when you had bad luck etc.. was usually up to the games sheer randomness, like for example take a boat out to sea in DST.. what mobs you encounter and how they will behave is purely up to chance.. I’ve had the Gnarwail decide it wanted to build me a nice little looking window so I can see the fish beneath my boat once or twice, but on other occasions it’s been RockJaw Shark or something else- this RNG “the game wants you dead” type stuff is most noticeable during world rollbacks- That Gnarwail may be out there on one rollback, he may be replaced by shark on another, or it may be a peaceful safe trip where your going on the 3rd rollback. wildfires are sort of the same thing, while yes they only happen near you (and unfortunately sometimes off screen) what they target to burn and where is as random as that encounter with my Gnarwail, DS/DST was always meant to be this Rogue-Lite type experience- the odds are constantly stacked against you and it’s purely up to the RNG gods what kind of experience your going to have. Wildfires actually have a “lots more” option now and that can be pure mad uncontrollable chaos (I find it fun but most will find such things frustrating.) what I don’t think wildfires should have is a ton of guaranteed options that make the threat of them existing at all irrelevant, you already have plenty of ways to counter wildfires, Water Balloon, Watering Can, Tree Canopy, Ice Flingomachine- Only roaming around in areas you DONT want to go up in a blazing inferno at dusk or night (wildfires only happen when the day is in yellow bar) they also don’t happen in Early or Late Summer. Their intended purpose (at least from what I can tell) is to encourage the player to explore at a certain TIME of day.. this wouldn’t be the first mechanic that did this, Spider Nest infestations work the same way (being safest to traverse at yellow day length when all spiders sleep and dangerous to traverse at dusk (red) or night (blue) where all the spiders will constantly be roaming Having something fully prevents wildfires that makes their threat irrelevant, would deplete the whole purpose of them being in the game at all in my opinion. I would love to see more done with wildfires & fire mechanics as a whole- Webber has a Magmatic skin and I’d love to see actual fire spiders in the game that look like that Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/135017-wildfires/#findComment-1510140 Share on other sites

willell
Perceive your wisdom and agree with you completely The difference between fire (hot) and ice (cold) on the world is too big to be compared. Players almost never make a flame blow arrow and use it, because it is almost meaningless, while the ice stick is commonly used because it is Easy-to-obtain control tools So I thought before that before fire became a practical mechanism (at least not now destructive), it was always rejected and rejected by players. Taking personal experience as an example, I have some hobbies (I guess everyone should have hobbies more or less). In summer, I basically don’t stay in forests, grasslands, dragonfly, etc. or even set foot. Because I am afraid of large-scale destruction of natural objects (especially if reeds and cacti are burned, I will feel very sad) Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/135017-wildfires/#findComment-1510509 Share on other sites
