Farms tank game performance

Recommended Posts

While I love the farming update for the complexity and convenience it can give, especially now that we can farm all year round, it seems like whenever there are a lot of farm plants (>10 just to guess) in a game and it's been going for a while (>30 days, I would again guess), performance starts tanking. Mostly framerate and responsiveness, but some friends and I are also getting weird crashes sometimes during things such as the antlion rages or frog rain.

We haven't ruled out what's causing the server crashes so I'm hesitant to say it's the farms interacting with the other events, especially because it's a modded playthrough, but the issues definitely arose after the farming overhaul. Maybe farms are adding too much overhead, what with how each farm plant consumes and produces four resources, tracks stress, and tracks time.

The servers being hosted are with the game client, not the dedicated server toolkit.

Are you running with any mods? That's curious that you're getting such a response.

The server has

  • 7+ Equip Slots Fix
  • API Gem Core (I forget what this is for so I don't know why it's running)
  • Classic Giant Health
  • Combined Status
  • Epic Healthbar
  • Food Values/Item Tooltips (server and client)
  • Global Positions
  • Infinite Touch Stone
  • Large Chest
  • No Thermal Stone Durability
  • Repair Mod
  • Slots Tweak & UI Optimizer
  • Wormhole Marks

I'm personally running:

  • Craft Pot
  • HD Item Icons
  • Where's My Beefalo
  • Geometric Placement
  • Gesture Wheel
  • [Gorge] Victorian HUD
  • Minimap HUD
  • Wortox Quick Heal

I don't think any of them are particularly high load (except Global Positions) but I could very well be wrong.

The issue didn't occur today when I intentionally limited how many plants I planted in a 2x2 area.

Food Values/Item Tooltips, can cause performance issues because it networks lots of data, minimap hud can cause framerate issues when rendering scenes that just barely hit the 60fps mark.

One of the food inspecting tooltip mods also spawns the prefab on the server every time someone looks at something at the world's origin and doesn't clean it up, I can't remember which one.

Geometric Placement has also had notable screen stutter when moving on and off farm tiles, though it seems to have been cleaned up for the most part at this point. I was getting a ton of lag from that mod alone when the update first dropped.

I noticed that, too. It seems like the mod doesn't quite know yet to just keep the grid on if you're mousing over the farm with a hoe.

I didn't know that about FV/IT. Is there an alternative that doesn't do that?

I play primarily on controller, which I've noticed also tends to be less laggy than playing with mouse. I suspect that's problem a result of mousing over things too quickly compared to the relative lethargy of turning the character with a joystick.

Also, Craft Pot creates thousands of interface elements which are being updated at all times (even when not cooking). It also runs a lot of calculations.

While it may not cause much trouble on its own, it certainly contributes to creating a bottleneck when combined with the mods mentioned above.
