I saw some jumping at it but they never appeared to do damage. Not positive but as a pure educated guess I would say that yes they can kill them considering they can kill (or will attack) just about anything else. I expected Giant Crops on my return after a trip (all other criteria met) but just had normal crops instead... Seems you need to be somewhat nearby for the Friendly Fruit Fly to do its thing.
