Set Lag Compensation (in the options menu) to None, by default

Recommended Posts

Hello all. Some time ago when I first started playing Don't Starve Together on my computer I was having problems with lag, even on my own worlds, with no one else on it. And from day 1, too. I asked for help and I was recommended to set "Lag Compensation" to "None", and was told that it's something everybody does to reduce lag.

So well, it's a bit counter-intuitive that this setting is actually causing lag, and so it might not be functioning as it should be. But I was just wondering about it, and though I do not know how it is for everybody else, maybe this setting should be set to None by default, since every now and then I see the advice popping up in discussions that turning it off makes the game way smoother.

yeah i agree. tbh this setting being on by default is bad because it makes a lot of animations and stuff choppy or end abruptly and for players who don't know what it does when they go on a server which they dont have good ping they will get hit from mobs when they are not close to them and they will be confused and almost always die soon after.... happened so many times for newbies who join my server which just makes the game annoying having to rez ppl cause they die from a mob which they where 2 tiles away from (but not really) thanks to lag compensation

you are mistaken. Lag Compensation Off is the one that's ultra choppy and jerky.

the game is smoother and visually better looking with compensation On. It represents the visuals better for the masses, at the cost of innaccuracy in combat.

no man, i tested both a good amount (i always play with it off now though) and lag compensation on actually degrades alot of the animations in game such picking up and harvesting things having some delay to them, certain animations sometimes end abruptly, and you sometimes get "teleported" back to a position you walked from.

the only thing that changes with lag compensation off other than fixing all those problems is the game shows you the true "delay" you have in the game either if your pc is super bad or you go on a server with bad ping so instead of your actions being done instantly there is a delay, but that is not a problem really. it's just showing you the truth of what and where you are in the game, while lag compensation just feeds you lies of what's actually happening to pretend you have no delay which can lead to many problematic situations which could be avoided if the player could've actually saw what where and what they were actually doing instead of being given visual lies..

i believe having if off by default will save hundreds of newbie lives, newbie lives matter!

this is just another suggestion on this topic klei should add a hover text thingy when you go on a setting explaining what it does because if a newbie goes in settings and sees something like "lag compensation" they might think automatically "wow, it's so great i can get more fps?" and not know they're actually giving themself more lag.. there's no way of knowing what the option actually does unless you test it a lot. they really need to add info hover texts when you hover on all the settings
