Settings option to show warning quotes immediately when enemies are approaching

Recommended Posts

This is inspired by a thread in the General Discussion forum about a hearing-impaired PS4 player who was having difficulty responding to the hound wave and giant warnings in time, particularly Deerclops. Most other events and conditions in the game that the player needs to be aware of have some sort of visual effect that appears on the screen at the same time as the sound cue, so that's why I'm concentrating on this specific thing instead of suggesting a full subtitle track.

If there was a client-side setting that could toggle the characters' warning quotes to play at the same time as the first growling noise instead of the third or fourth, perhaps titled something like "Immediate Warning Quotes", this would be a good accessibility feature for hearing-impaired players but also beneficial to people playing with the sound turned down or off and newbies who want a stronger hint that something they need to deal with is about to happen. Having it disabled by default would mean nothing would change for established players and newbies who want the original 'is that ambience or a monster approaching' experience unless they opted in, similar to how the seafaring camera, screen shake, and Wigfrid's umlauts can be turned off but are on by default.

Lol I can see it in the game right now “Warning there is a Spider about to approach you”

*Dies to Spider 2 minutes later*

”How the heck did you die? I literally warned you this exact thing was going to happen 2 minutes in advance..”

I personally think that a visual cue would be the most immersive way to implement something like this. The idea that, when you're walking back to base in winter, you'll see the screen shake with red vibrating marks on both sides of your screen and this would help distinguish when they are spawning.
