I think that it would be good for an unlockable system. Like so "Defeat 30 Beefalos" and you are rewarded with a hunters outfit or "Kill 1,000,000 overall hostiles" and be rewarded with the character "Mega-Wilson" etcetera. This would make players have an objective if they want it because it is not being forced at them and it gives them sonething to work for.

I like the idea of rewarding "achievements" with unlockables. It's how the game works now with the science machine, they made it to encourage exploration and guide learning without beating you over the head with tutorials or achievements. It works so well I didn't even notice it til it was pointed out in the penny arcade interview. Having something like "extraordinary research machines", where you can build things like the hunter's outfit you suggested with 100 Beefalo hair, and the outfit will give some benefit just like a beekeeper's hat does now. It would be the ultimate version of the research machine.

Heck, you could take a page out of the Eberron campaign setting of Dungeons & Dragons with their eldritch machines, and build individual epic machines for each epic item you want to make before you can even begin to feed the resources to it for the item.

Personally, crafting a powerful item to continue using in the world instead of rewarding grinding through x number of monsters with an item I no longer care about once I have it because I'm burnt out on the game from the grind is my idea of good game design.

This is what I think about "tutorial", "grindy" and "not-really-an-achievement" achievements (which, according to my Steam library, are around %97 of them)...

That was pretty funny

And teemo is right, achievement do bring "grind" to the game, but only for the people that want to grind for them. As long as they are optional that shouldn't be too big of a problem. I would dislike an achievement system that specifically rewards u for doing grindy things. I dont mind the idea of "u get a character if u kill a lvl 3 spider nest", i dislike the idea of "kill 1000 spiders" to unlock a char that has a spider theme to him/her.
