Help with piping lag

Recommended Posts

For the past few cycles, I've been having strange freezes every half-second to two seconds, reminiscent of the small lag spike during an autosave, but much more frequent. I've looked all over the place trying to figure out what's wrong, and although I'm not entirely certain, I think it's the fault of extensive piping. I looked at my performance (no bottlenecks), my mods (cleaning helped a slight bit, read further), and I stumbled onto the idea of my terribly messy liquid pipe network being the culprit. I loaded an older save in which there was no piping at all, with all the same mods from this save, and found no performance issues whatsoever. Again, I'm not entirely sure that it's the pipe network's fault, but it seems the most likely culprit. Is there anything I can do?

If you're seeing stuttering of flow, know that the little blobs moving down the pipes are purely visual, and that purely visual effect is interrupted by dupes constructing or deconstructing pipes anywhere. If that's what your lag looks like, worry not - your liquids are flowing just fine.

Try disabling the timelapse, it is created every cycle and causes a lag.

No other lags for me with your save. Only during on autosave and timelaps.

what does that function do? is that the quality of the image created along the save file?

This function used in colony summary for show mini-clip for progress your colony.

Every cycles at noon game do screenshot entire map and place PNG image to folder

"c:\Users\<name account>\Documents\Klei\OxygenNotIncluded\RetiredColonies\<name colony>"

Settings set quality of this image. On my weak hardware this function causes 1-2 second lag like autosave. So.. i just shut off this function always on start new game, I don't care about timelapse, not used.

That has nothing to do with my issue, I'm having in game performance drops every half second, not minor OCD at pipe blobs.

I did this and suffered through an entire cycle to see if the lag would ease up once it was no longer recording a timelapse, which it unfortunately did not.

I had exactly the same problem you described but the developer found out the cause and I fixed it.

Check my forum post here in general discussion, the solution worked for me.

Wow, one ladder into a caustic biome and bam, all lag gone instantly. Thank you so much, it was starting to get really bad. Can't wait for an explanation on how the hell an achievement was causing lag...

So I went to load your save...

I didn't observe any strange lagginess, so it might possibly be MOD related.  Also, you had dupes building piping.   When there's a lot of piping, or there's a lot of confusing paths, then there can be lag each time a segment gets built as the game rechecks the possible paths for the liquid to take through the pipes.  Anyway, on to the actual piping and problems:

First, you have several areas that are something like this:

This is a loop and can result in some confusion.  Packets of liquid don't know which way to go. In the case of the output from your water sieve, you can change it in two ways:

This will split output so that one packet goes across the bridge, and the other goes up to the toilets.

This method will prioritize output across the bridge.  Once that direction is full, liquid packets will go through the pipe leading up.

Anyway, other than the occasional odd loop, there's nothing with your piping that could be causing a problem.  Even those  loops really won't be that big of a deal -- as long as you fix them at some point and don't make more.

So, I'm guessing that perhaps it was something MOD related and that you were building pipe segments.  I'm not sure what all those mods do, but if one of them is broken, it could add a lot of extra lag.

Wow, thank you for all that help, but... I've already solved the issue. I was missing an achievement, which was causing the lag somehow. Still, I will be using those tips you've outlined!
