Bird Up
Hello. Today I was playing DST on a Klei server, and there was a guy who had found base, burnt it down, and he got banned. Everyone kinda assumed that the threat was dealt with after a 7/0 unanimous vote to ban the guy... but he was able to rejoin the next day and burn down our base again. Funny thing is, he spawns on top of our base every time he rejoins... So he only needs to be in the server for 5 seconds to burn everything down, and then he leaves. We banned him again, and he rejoined the day after and burnt everything again.... and again. He kept rejoining to check to see if there was anything left to burn. Why in the world is there a ban feature if it only boots someone from the game for a couple minutes at most? We have an amazing base which took many hours of hard work to make and it cannot be expected of us to rebuild our base somewhere else in the minute or two that it takes for him to recover from the ban and rejoin just to burn everything down again. You can't just say that dedicated griefers are just always going to have their way. If the ban system had actually worked, this guy shouldn't be able to join for at least a full real life 24 hour day. That would give him time to forget about our server, and give us time to relax from griefers. But because he can recover from a ban within a couple minutes, he's just gonna keep going at it. He was doing this in SEVERAL Klei servers, and in fact, someone came to our server only to warn us about him, and then he left. People are tracking him down to warn others about him, because it's too easy for dedicated griefers like him to ruin games. The system in place sucks, and there is no accountability for the actions of these terrible players. maradyne
I'd totally be in favor of a scaling system. Like...if you get kicked, it starts a timer, and if you get kicked again quickly, you're kept out of servers you're kicked from for longer each time. Scaling up 'ban' time, with natural punishment level decay over time. Track across the game. Start with not being able to rejoin the server you were kicked from for a few minutes, multiply the delay before you can rejoin with each subsequent kick. Each multiplication also multiplies the amount of time that your kick record will be tracked. Remove one level of kick record/rejoin time buffer whenever you go that same amount of time x10 without a kick or ban. Growth for kicks regardless of which server the punishment occurred on makes it harder for griefers to run around servers causing mayhem everywhere. Natural decay prevents long-term damage to people who are unfairly punished and allows for reform. Example: Get kicked, 1 minute before you can rejoin. Keep getting kicked: 5 minutes, 25 minutes, 100 minutes, ect. I feel like x5 on ban time is fair. Track as such, using x10: committing enough shenanigans to earn 100 minutes of ban time from the community leads to a 1,000 minute tracker...on top of a 250 minute tracker, 50 minute tracker, and 10 minute tracker stacked up by the previous levels. so, 1,310 minutes of total tracking for 4 consecutive kicks. ~21 hours total. Commit more shenanigans before they all expire, and you jump back to your highest punishment level with every timer reset...which would put a real gem with 5 consecutive offenses in one day at the 500 minute ban level, or 6310 total stacked tracking time...meaning that their crazy behavior will be tracked for ~4 days; that's 4 days time in which if they do anything to anger the population of any server, they'll receive a pretty sizable ban timer on that server. Crime and punishment. Can be accomplished by having servers send out a ping to Klei's already existent player session tracking server upon a kick occurring so the Klei server can tally up the player's current number of tracked kicks, and send back a number to the game server indicating the current multiplier for how long the player should be prevented from rejoining. Potential issue: abuse by some jerk setting up a server that pings every user they dislike with infinite kick levels. Similar was experienced with the old vote kick system until it was altered; this was experienced again until the culprit was finally banhammered into the stratosphere. Fix for issue: block the jerk's Klei ID and any Dedicated server tokens owned by their account from interacting with the system whatsoever. I like to be considerate of the downsides as part of being realistic. However, I still feel that the benefits of such a scaling and tracking system would outweigh the costs, and feel that the problem characters in this case can be dealt with effectively.
