EULA Saved World Bug - Worlds gone after accepting EULA

  • Pending

Found a bug today when logging into Don't Starve Together on the Xbox Series X console. Upon logging in, the EULA pops up and after pressing accept, all of the saved worlds I had are gone. All present outfits are also gone too however, the items that I purchased from the store are still present but I have to re-equip them all to each character.

Note that as of Yesterday (March 31st). my saved worlds were present and everything was working correctly (specifically I had 5 worlds saved, one of which is day 5000+)

I've tried restarting the game, restarting my Xbox Series X console, uninstalling and re-installing the game, all of which did not work to resolve the issue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Steps to Reproduce

I've tried restarting the game (ending application and loading the game back up), restarting the console (both hard reset and by resetting the console via "restart console"), all of which did not work in resolving the issue.

User Feedback

While it's April fools, this is not a joke as seeing all of the saved worlds gone basically means over 1400 hours of game play lost due to a bug. I just checked and the worlds are still not there, showing "new world" on each slot :( Does anyone have any suggestions or solutions for this topic?

I'm sorry to hear that you lost your worlds. It sounds like either your save data was damaged and couldn't be loaded, or you had some sort of cloud save problem. I have a couple of questions that might help us figure out what went wrong, but at this point there isn't any way to recover your save data.

Did your xbox give you a message about conflicted cloud and local saves before this, or did the game give you a mesage about damaged savedata? When you finish a game session, do you normally shut down the world and go back to the main menu, or do you use quick resume to come back to it later?

Thank you for your response, I appreciate it since there is a bunch of info on other past forums about this topic but there has not been a solution.

In answering your questions:

  1. The day before this happened (March 31st), I exited the world via "disconnect" option in the pause menu and then loaded into the main menu. I also waited for the save icon to disappear before I dashboard and end the application. I always do this when I'm leaving the game or changing a world setting on the world I'm in.
  2. During this time, my Xbox didn't prompt me with a message about conflicted cloud and local saves or damaged savedata
  3. Before I shut off my Xbox, I close or "end" all of my games that I play or use in which I don't recall using quick resume feature...

Hope this helps in describing more on this situation.

I'm open to any suggestions on this topic, thank you.

FYI, I encountered this due to cloud save problem, when I switched between two consoles. Luckily I could sync the other Xbox's local save to solve this.

Thank you KeyRecord1 for sharing this information. It's good to know that I'm not the only one who has had this issue recently or on console however, I hope that none one else experience this bug with the EULA or where saves are lost...

I also want to add that out of all the games I've played, Don't Starve Together (so far as I can recall) is the only one that I've ever had issues with cloud saves or syncing data, etc. I thought that maybe its the could saves for other games but I tested the cloud saves when re-syncing data for Fallout 4, Skyrim, Minecraft and other games and all of them worked correctly in syncing data with the cloud and saves (other than Fallout 4 taking a while to sync data in size).

Moving forward, I'm thinking of just starting a new world on DST since there is no other way to retrieve the worlds I've lost but before I start one, I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to, perhaps make a backup save or backup the saves for DST so that if this issue were to occur again, a backup save is somewhere for access or recovery (for console users)? I know that on PC backup saves can be done through other means but I've never done anything for console on Xbox, thought that I'd ask here before starting a new world and then potentially lose it to the same bug or issue.

Any additional help would be greatly appreciated.

Again, I'd like to thank everyone who commented on this topic and for your information and suggestions. This helps a lot! :D

Hi, i have the same problem as y'all. I thought about the same thing of making a backup of my new world but we can't. I hope Klei will fix this sycing problem bc it is the root of the problem. If you manage to get your worlds back can you tell me how did you get it back? I had a 1k days world and you know, time is time and we put the work in.

I thought it was my mistake that i lost my world, but now i know.

So thank u for just the information of having the same problem as me.

Hi adam210012, thank you for sharing your experience related to this topic and for commenting. I'm sorry to hear that you've been having the same problem as we have in losing worlds due to syncing of saved data.

In answering your question, I'll keep you posted with the details if I somehow get my worlds back but as of now (I checked again about an hour ago) all 5 slots are still saying "New world", so my worlds have not been recovered or appeared back yet.

I 100% agree with you too that Klei needs to fix this or move towards fixing this as for a lot of players out there, worlds that are 1000+ days or higher require a lot of our time to build and work on.

This being said, I did some research about this same issue and found that this issue existed in other posts on the forums and elsewhere (one was posted on Jan 13, 2023 and another on Nov 20, 2022) so this bug or issue with syncing data or from the EULA affecting Saved Worlds is not something new...

Another thought that I looked at is possibly having the saves be saved to the console via hard drive instead of the cloud since this issue specifically affects cloud storage. Though I have looked at this being possible if someone is playing DST offline however, I have no idea if this is even possible on console for players who are online. Most sources I've looked at say that cloud storage save locations cannot be changed... Just something that I thought of bring this up and seeing if this helps....

Hope this helps for anyone who is also experiencing the same issue with their Worlds.

It seems like every time I get the “Which save type do you want to use?” I always find that Cloud Data always says 0.01KB with an incorrect date, choosing that would obviously cause your data on your console to get wiped and everything gets deleted.

Here is one example:

The only way I seen this case happen is when you unplug your Xbox while running/playing the game or when restarting your Xbox while the save icon is indicated. Either way, if you get this message, always choose console to avoid your data being wiped.

I’ve never found any problems using quick resume on this game, nor do I either get the “Which save type do you want to choose?” Message.

Thank you FireBoss34 for the info. I agree that choosing the console option is the best choice in your example to prevent data from being wiped. However, when I lost my worlds, the “Which save type do you want to use?” message never popped up or appeared. In my situation, only the EULA appeared stating to accept or decline in which after I pressed "accept", all of my saved worlds were gone (EULA appeared on April 1st). The day before this occurred (March 31st), I was playing the game and I never had the “Which save type do you want to use?” message appear.

At least from my experience, it's definitely an issue or bug directly related to the EULA that pops up.

Though from your description, players would also get their worlds wiped if they choose the wrong option when the “Which save type do you want to use?” message appears.

My hopes is that players won't be faced with the same situations that we have experienced where their worlds get wiped, in the near future or that this issue or bug gets fixed!

Thank you again for the info!

@ImAll4Peace Actually, yesterday I actually got the EULA glitch without any Xbox prompt saying “Which type do you want to use?” or anything related. And I actually found a fix for this.

(Note that you need “Your home Xbox” enabled to use this fix.)

After receiving the EULA, immediately close the game and go in offline mode. This will prevent your cloud data from syncing to your Xbox and replacing your progress with a corrupted sync.

After doing so, restart your Xbox and launch DST in offline mode. Then sign in, and you should have your data in offline mode.
Now go home (Do not close your game) go to \Settings\Network\ and press go online.

Then go back into DST and wait at least 5 minutes for your Xbox console to sync your data to the cloud.

Hopefully this fixes your data, also any questions are welcomed, sorry if I typed this incorrectly—Was busy at the current time of writing this.

If you get any prompt saying “Your save data has changed since you last played” or something, I’l try to help you when I get the chance.

Today I tried this (from the detailed fix that you described) and sadly, my worlds didn't get restored however, I think that this is because I pressed "Accept" on the EULA already when it popped up on April 1st. Essentially I think that my data was already lost when I accepted the EULA and tried troubleshooting by restarting multiple times and stuff.

This being said however, I strongly think that this fix would be very useful for anyone who has the EULA to occur or pop up but for those who have NOT pressed "Accept" on the EULA yet. I'll be sure to pass this on to others so that they won't get their worlds wiped if the EULA shows up for them. Thank you for sharing this.

Though this is something that can be done to solve the issue when it occurs, I still think that players shouldn't have to go through this process to prevent their worlds from getting wiped if this bug with the EULA gets fixed. This issue with the EULA has occurred before in the past in which I remember one user saying the EULA popped up every single time he launched DST so, in regards to this fix, this would be very tedious to do every single time for his case.

Thanks again for the info!

Hey! Sorry I forgot to mention this, but this fix only works when you get the EULA for the first time and if you react quickly. If you had the glitch for a while it wouldn't work because your data is already synced to the cloud. Meaning there is no fix to getting your world savd back.

Also do you have the EULA glitch

(The glitch where it repeats the EULA and wipes your data every time you restart/log in)?

No worries! The info you have provided has helped a lot since this issue was brought up in the past on multiple other posts but no one had a concrete fix to work around it but to just accept that the saved worlds and stuff were gone.

I'm thinking though that there are probably other players who are experiencing the EULA bug as well however, they might not know this solution so, I'll pass this fix or solution on to them and hopefully they won't have their worlds wiped like mine were.

As for my situation, on April 1st the EULA popped up and after accepting it, I went through the usual troubleshooting things of ending the game and restarting, restarting my console, etc. in which through this whole process, the EULA didn't appear constantly when loading DST on Xbox Series X, so in my case, the EULA only appeared once.

This being said, there was a post on the forums back around November of 2022 by EOReality where he experienced the same EULA bug and ended up losing his saved data however, for his case, the EULA was constantly popping up for him (on Xbox Series S) for every time he launched or started DST (Link to his post:  EOReality's Post). As an example that this happened for others.

But again, I hope that Klei fixes or addresses this issue since it is a game breaking bug for console players and it puts a risk for anyone who is wanting to spend a lot of time building their worlds for a long time past day 500+.

This happened to me as well :( I was so far in the game with my girlfriend this is honest demoralizing. I did try to offline mode suggestion immediately after receiving it but it didn’t work. Time to quit I guess? Not doing all of that work again    :(((((

I am very sorry for your loss, and it seems for me when I got the EULA (while logging in), I accepted it and I still had my worlds back but my settings and presets were reset, so I must have a different issue than most of y’all have..

Edit: I did not press any buttons to trigger the EULA, and I did not get the EULA while in the main menu screen, I only got it while logging in after the game started up.

This happened to me today. XBOX Series X. Saved and exited normally this morning. Upon logging in this evening, received a prompt to accept the EULA and was asked by XBOX to choose local or cloud save data. Chose cloud save. That was the wrong option apparently (even though there were no warning signs this morning upon save and exit). All game save slots have been deleted. Klei - is there a way to back games up separately from the XBOX cloud. Seems there is some kind of compatibility issue between the DST servers and XBOX Live... maybe?

We should probably spread word that when people get this Xbox popup they should choose “This Console” instead of the cloud save. It’s the only way to avoid this situation.

Hi- I just wanted to add, choosing console may not resolve the issue. This exact error happened to my partner and I. Our power kicked for just a moment and it made us choose the console or cloud. We chose console. All of his files are gone- this has not happened with any other game and we have reason to believe it is not a syncing issue :[

It looks like you've gotten very unlucky with your situation, while most data losses occur due to syncing issues with the Xbox Network, it looks like your game was cut off during a critical save.
