Printed dupe with Artist Tier 2 skill cannot carve sculpting block

I have printed a dupe with the tier 2 art skill.

I have constructed the small sculpting blocks. They won't carve the blocks and the blocks show the "colony lacks required skill" icon.

This seems unintended, if a dupe with tier 3 digging is printed they can dig diamond but not abyssalite, this is not consistent with the artist who requires the pre-requisite skills. An artist should be able to produce tier 3 work without the tier 1 skill.

I suspect it's the colony skill check expecting tier 1 rather than expecting any tier.

Probably worth testing with a tier 3 dupe and see what happens when they are given the tier 1 skill but not tier 2. Will they produce tier 1 or tier 3 art.

Steps to Reproduce

Ensure NOBODY has tier 1 art skill.

Print artist with level 2 or 3 skill.

Build a small sculpting block.

dupe will not produce any art at all unless they are given the tier 1 art skill.

User Feedback

That is still how all "gifted skills" work at this moment.

I have a dupe with gifted t3 "masterworks" but i had to give them t1 art so they can work on stuff.

It's the same with all digging stuff - if you have t3 digging, the dupe can't dig through t1 stuff, only t3.

The problem is that the T2/T3 skills are useless on their own, I think that skill branch needs changing so that each tier is +1 quality and all grant the ability to do artwork.

With mining, if you get T3 (or even T4), T1 and T2 remain useful since they each unlock different tiles to mine. The two are fundamentally different, which makes it ok for mining to do this but not artwork.

The alternative solution would be to just not give out specific skills that have this issue, which would include things like tier 2 ranching (only grants a husbandry boost), better rocket piloting (which is temporarily gone), and T2/3 artwork, to name a few.

Side note: Would be interesting if some specific skill branches, such as mining, did not have the prerequisite limitation, instead letting you pay the single hefty morale cost and only get specific things. After all, if that skill can be granted by the printer, it should be possible to do the same without by paying the morale cost.

There are other advantages to unlocking high tier skills

  • You get them earlier and don't have to wait for leveling up
  • You don't have to pay the morale cost, which allows you to pick up some other skill later and have a more versatile dupe

In any case this isn't a bug. The design is debatable, but that really belongs in the suggestion forum

Changed Status to Known Issue

Hey folks, thanks very much for the great discussion. Because this is a frequently confusing experience, even if this ends up being the final design I would consider the resulting confusion to be a usability bug. Either way, it must be chewed on a bit more!

Marking as Known Issue to track that something should be done about it, one way or another! :)
