Can't dispel the darkness

Yeah, I've had that happen to me multiple times. The workaround I was able to achieve is to first - make the dupe stand above the dark tile, then decostruct the surrounding tiles/ladders so that the dupe will fall down after deconstructing the tile/ladder directly beneath them. Upon falling down the area will get revealed.

My workaround is a little different. Just get a dupe and use the "Move to" button somewhere in the dark and voila. For the basement, you need to deconstruct one of the mesh tiles and move a dupe there too

I do pretty much this, but since I'm unable to make a dupe move there I command them to deconstruct a tile inside the room and cancel the deconstruct when the darkness is banished.
