Give the Hay Fever a rest

Recommended Posts

Similar to Cold in Winter, Heat in Summer, and even rain/wetness in Spring and SW there need to be a sort of relief for Hay Fever.

In winter you're warmer during the day, in summer you'll cool during dusk and night, and there is clothing to complete negate wetness, but Hay Fever only have the Gas Mask, and taking certain foods that you need to stock up on, and with how shorts the seasons are now, there isn't enough time to do that.

The Gas Mask, Oscillating Fab, Pith Hat and Cowl are all expensive/require rare items and should maybe be considered mid/late game items.

There should be a middle ground, where there are early game solution for fog and Hay Fever. Like when you get relief from Hay Fever inside or Hay fever comes is waves, where it builds up slower during some days and faster during others.

Maybe have more clothing that is water/fog proof, so you're not helpless without armor in a fight.(I actually died because I was being swarmed by Rapid Beetles and the fog hindered my movement and my sight.)

I suppose what bother me the most is that you're essentially punished for not gathering Nestle, by being forced to wear the gas mask, which drains sanity, no other clothing that protect you from the elements, except maybe the Ice Cube... but still.

I just feel to manage with a lot of the things you either need to do a lot of prep work or have late game items.

What are your thoughts?

Pith hat is super cheap. You can get Cloth by hammering your balloon at the start, and Vines from flytrap seedlings.
I definitely agree that there should be more variance in possible solutions for the seasons, though. Compared to the issues in ROG and SW, there's a lot less ways to interact with the seasonal mechanics here.

They definitely need to change something with the Hay Fever mechanic. I spend most of the lush season staying in town or inside my house, trying to manage my ever draining sanity, rather than exploring the rest of the world. If you are playing as either Wickerbottom or Wigfrid, this becomes difficult, since they cannot use a whole set of sanity curing items. Especially Wigfrid since she can't even eat nettles in the first place. Then when ever my sanity is low enough that I am being attacked by shadow creatures, every so often I will have the shadow creature I have just spent wear and tear on my gear, trying to fight it just up and disappear on me for no reason, thus preventing any sanity restoration from defeating it. The gas mask really isn't much of a solution to hay fever either, as the sanity drain from it, seems a bit high. They could at least reduce the amount that it drains while worn.

Klei could possible change how often hay fever affects you based on your location. For example, if you are in the city, where there are fewer plants, the attacks came a lot less frequently. Then whenever you are in the wilds where there are plenty of plants, that would be when it would hit you the most. Being inside of house should also offer some reprieve from the hay fever effect. With winter or summer, you can reduce the effects with certain structures or clothing items. With Hay Fever, you only have the options of wearing the sanity draining gas mask, or collecting nettles, which don't even seem to bloom as much, since one of the recent updates.

The fog doesn't bother me as much, but they could vary the amount that it obstructs your vision. The constant tunnel vision can be a problem, especially in dangerous situations. The one situation that got me, was when I was playing as Webber, having to wear the shamlet instead of the pith hat, with oincs in my inventory. As I trudged toward the shop at dusk, I was blinded by the masked pig, who stole some of my oincs, and ran off.

The only thing that bother me about the pith hat, is the fact that you need it to be able to move around in the fog while wearing something in the body slot, yet it does nothing to prevent you from being struck by lighting that occurs during the fog. At least the durability of the pith hat doesn't drain too much, and it actually seems to restore some sanity while you wear it. I am in my second humid season in my current game, and I am still using the same pith hat that I made for the last. The gas mask on the other hand seems to be more expensive, at least in terms having to track down the peagawk, and either blow darting them or actually getting them in a corner to kill or pluck them. Then when you go to the shop to buy the cloth for either hat, it is a matter of whether the shop even has the cloth for sale. Which when I went to the shop after my first gas mask ran out, the cloth wasn't even available.

Sorry, for the long rant.
