If you are hosting the world on the same machine, then this is due to entity counts increasing.

Things like bee stingers, rot, etc tend to pile up all over the place in the world and these edicts take up cpu cycles for every other entity that probes nearby entities.

Which is to say that it exponentially increases cpu load as more entities exist, leading to less performance.

Sandstorm... ( yes that gives me lags... )

Flammable things burning in Summer ( Wild fires ) ...
