Has anyone found a way to keep your base sustained with the new geysers in the ranching upgrade?
The amount of water they produce during their active period is extremely low. Unfortunately, when I was creating my container, I kept the geyser buried so my dupes did not constantly get scalded which led to no water being created for the 40 or so cycles it took to build it up.

I have 3 cool steam geysers in the area, 2 in cold biomes near entropy stations. So getting cool oxygen is no problem whatsover. However, Getting cool water back to the base for plants and other things is quite difficult for me. There just is not enough water being produced by the geysers in my opinion.
The container I used is made to get the geyser to be filled til the point it is dormant because there is too much water for it to release steam, letting tempshift and conductive wire bridge separate the temperature through cooled hydrogen with weezeworts. I do have a polluted water geyser, however that will still be coming out at 40/104 degrees which then needs to be cool. I would prefer not to have to use a aquatuner as again that is more cooling needing to be done.

Any ideas would be great.

Recycle water, stay small..

Not the easiest to stay small and sustain. I do admit that food got really good for a min but didnt realize how fast I ate through dirt so im currently at like  5T of dirt and that's it xD

But for the dormancies, I have one that is 80 cycles long... That's just ridiculous. You have to get enough water during the 116 cycles to sustain you for 80 cycles? Yeah right.. I'm managing so far but my farms are still small. Just barely staying alive with bristle and eggs.

Cook slime above 125 to get dirtimage.thumb.png.7d1f517c2194e5cd0268d7eccaaa453d.png
I use in this playthrough no plant box hydrotile, only natural grown food, easy..

Don't you have to dig the dirt up quickly or it'll turn into sand? I would do that but with the priorities all janky for me. Itll all turn to sand xD

When you use something with temperature, below "sand turning temp" it will stay dirt.
Magma is not good in your case and was only an example :)

Cool. Still the issue is that water isn't all that easy to come by with the geysers. Sure, I could turn polluted water into clean water but then I will still need to cool that, Eventually I'll run out of polluted water too.

I am pretty new to ONI so Idk how people survived without geysers. lol

Theres a ton of rng in the new geysers, but that just adds to replay value imho. When you start a new game, you can either dig in debug for a good layout or hop in and see what happens. Either way, the symbiotic loops are there for a reason, so it is ranching. Pretty much all maps i played had abundance of ph2o, enough for some 1k cycles if managed correctly. One of the reasons why water issues can happen is relying too heavily on the natural gas loop and too many dupes too fast. As the infrastructure grows, so does consumption, and water gets deleted at a fast rate. Ranching brought new interesting variables to the loop. Arent you glad no critters need water? I am :)

Lol, yeah til the day we see a critter water dripper. I guess I am just bad at ONI. I just feel the water from geyser is way less than before. even with quicker cycles.. Just feels to produce less steam/water.

They do, how good they are is all random. You can get 2 very bad water/steam geysers or 2 very good ones, metal volcanoes and stuff. Thats where the challenge is, you never know what youll find. Experience goes a long way in ONI

I opened the map in debug for 5 different seeds and none had geysers that were even remotely close to the old ones. So how do you sustain yourself on this new system.

Experience. Look for the synergies. There are a LOT of those, you just have to find the right balance. And that comes through experience.

Something i learned from last run (cycle 1k+) was NOT to rely just on natg power. It deletes a lot of water, and you can make power with fertilizer, but cant get water back. However, you can generate similar amounts of power without deleting so much water by spreading the evil through the villages. Coal power was set aside as backup before the ranching update, since coal was a limited resource, but experience tells me it can make a glorious comeback. Some natg, fertilizer for hatches, coal, co2, slicksters, oil, petroleum generator, smart batteries, automation... its all linked. There is a powerful synergy here, but as i mentioned, finding the balance requires a lot of game experience. And experience leads to pre planning ability, which will give you a massive advantage in mid-late game, because of flexibility.

Crazy stuff heh :) This is a game that will pull your brain out if you choose to accept the challenge. Its not about kung fu master reflexes, being able to click a mouse button 10 times per second, or knowing what the winning strategy is. Its about gaining enough experience to build according to what you have, not what you take for granted.

Was your last run with the new geysers? The polluted water geyser could potentially be a great thing for natg farms

It largely depends on the active periods and yield, pretty much all geysers sucked really bad, way too bad to provide of any sort of sustainability. I could have planned for active periods and such, but i was lazy and over confident.

Ranching is here to provide an alternative to farming, when maps suck for water. Plants need water (berries use water, mushrooms use slime that can be converted into po2 and purified, sleet wheat can be gather in the wild in abundance if the cold biomes are preserved). No critters need water. They just delete mass in exchange for something. Hatches can be mass farmed, but require automation for proper feeding, they eat A TON, but it should be possible to create a hatch-coal-coal power-hatching loop in exchange for surplus world mass, which is in over abundance, so it acts like water, basically turn rocks into food. Shine bugs are low maintenance, i dont even know if you can get meat from them, theyre just too cute, but theyre awesome for eggs. Pufts suck. Best breed a few and let them lose, they act like deodorizers and dump slime for po2. Slicksters are a tight balance, but oil is a limited resource anyways. You cant sustain enough slicksters to cover alternate petroleum power or even boil it into natg, but they do delete a ton of co2 mass, thus relieving atmospheric pressure. Until co2 pressure at oil level is just a few grams, when it used to be some 10kg.

See where im getting at? This is all planned. Ranching is not just some fancy alternative, its a legit way to patch the shortcomings when you land on a very ****ty map, and water is a really valuable resource. Rocks are food. Co2 is power. Thats just cool :)

Then how would you get the oxygen? Take the slime from the puft and turn into algae/ph20 and convert that to water? Would that be sustainable? Best way to get a ton of polluted oxygen? ph20 geyser? po2 geyser?

Thats the reason why i called it a quit. It was not sustainable anymore, just because i made a lot of mistakes not planing to go that far. Thing is, the further you go, the more you learn. Its crazy how you think your set for a long time and then youre done for but dont now about it yet.

I would eventually run dry on water, and then air. If i had used my resources in a more balanced way, id be ok for way longer. It was a HUGE lesson learned. Just have to read the map. Either way, spamming berries for food may NOT be the best long run approach. The more water you save, the healthier, more balanced the whole ecosystem is. And barbecue is an awesome food, If you play smart, you can preserve cold (wheat) and peppernut biomes. That gives you a lot of free food. So it saves a lot of water on berries

Mealwood is something to get away from quick, and so berries. Not because it makes dupes happier, it saves A LOT of water. The downside is, at this point, sooner or later, it will be sieved water. So, hot. This is where you go from mealwood to berries, either you have access to sustainable cold water (not exist) or have enough game experience to deal with it. Experience always wins

Its not about the eggs, its about the meat and coal.

If you want to farm eggs, do it with shine bugs. They are way easier to support, altho phosphorite is a limited resource, its really no used for anything else but peppernuts. If you preserve pepernut pockets, youll be ok for a while. Just another thing that comes with experience tho, do you save phosphorite for shines of peppers? Just have to do the math

Idk if there is a difference in production rate, but it sure seemed like shine bugs take logger to produce them and they go stale faster.

How do you figure they're easier to support though? as you said phosphorite is limited where as hatches can eat a lot more.

Yo, does the microchip buff not stay permanently?
