Maybe alchemy might be a long-term solution for scientists? Make gold out of lead. A small "hadron collider" (or whatever device is applicable) to lift/lower elements in the period table. The device would take a considerable amount of energy but would be able to make transitions between certain elements. This would be a nice addition to fill the gaps between mineral geysers, which are not all guaranteed to spawn.
