Pointing on them would show the text in the small "hint" pane at the mouse pointer. Clicking on them would allow to edit the text. The first word or first n characters would be visible and readable without having to point nor click on it - depending on the zoom. If you zoom in, more text is visible. I'd use this in first place to mark storage areas, like "Sand" and "Aby", and to place notices for dupes, err, for myself.
