x4550
E.g. during eating and sleeping times. They cover up too much of a dupe's individuality. I start to forget what they look like, especially on the ones whose hairstyles get completely covered. Then all you have to go by is skin color and eyebrows/eyelashes, if they have any. Kabrute
once mastered the job is capable even without holding it. Mastered farmer can still run the farm fertilizer while wearing miner helmet. You can take the hat off when their master workers and never need wear them again.
Ricordis
Years ago I played a game called Wiggles. Same kind of game but much less complex. The Wiggles (Dupe equivalent) changed their headgear depending on the task they'd choose to work on now. Dupes could handle it alike: Hat off if doing something not job related. But I'd also like to see at glance which job a Dupe has. So maybe they just put their hats off if going to sleep or for bathroom tasks or eating, massages, sick in the medbay... If they're not working the job they're assigned to, it's either temporary, or they aren't able to get to their job. If they can't get to their job, it's probably something you need to debug, so having the hat off during all non-job tasks would be best.

HackIntosh
If a dupe doesn't wear any hat he isn't employed, resulting in an unemployed debuff.
