temperature sensor up to 500°C +

Recommended Posts

Hi,

i tried to build an automatic oil to petroleum chamber using magma.

in theory it works fine - practically its impossible for my idea, cause i cant trigger sth by the temperature around 450°C (petroleum before vaporization).

So i suggest that there should be the option to use the temperature sensor for more than 200°C (current max.).

any chance?

Thanks

Yeah, I agree, we need a high-temp sensor. Still... an automatic converter using magma is largely impractical. I've tried it several times now. Even if you manage to get the appropriate vacuum chambers (which is quite difficult), magma just doesn't have that much energy in it. :/

Magma has a specific heat of 0.2 (J/g)/K. Crude Oil has a specific heat of 1.69 (J/g)/K. Magma on the map seems to top out around 1600°C and it stops being useful at 400°C. A single square of magma holds about 1840 kg of magma. 0.2 (J/g)/K*1840kg*1200K is 441.6MJ.

Crude Oil, on the other hand, needs to move from 60°C to 400°C. 1.69(J/g)/K*340K is 574.6 J/g.

441.6MJ/(574.6J/g) is 930kg of petroleum, which is a little over one square, enough to make 559kg of plastic. So even if you had a perfect oven, you'd need a new square of magma for every square of crude you converted to petroleum.

Now, add the significant heat losses you take just for opening up the magma. Even when I try to block it off, magma freezes after losing just 200°C (that's only 20kJ/kg). That transfers out quite quickly, leaving you with a pile of hot rock, but no magma with with to refill your oven.

Thanks for a great suggestion for an easy to implement and useful "mod" ;)

I hope it's okay with you that I've used your idea, if not or if you have any issues let me know!
