Trying to change character's speed depending how close he is to a mob

So essentially, I want this character to have a 25% boost, equivalent to a completely full Wolfgang, but this is clearly overpowered for general travel.

I instead want the speed boost to exist only when fighting a hostile mob, giving the excellent kiting abilities without breaking the character for travel, but I have no idea where to even begin.

Hey @StealthBeast, I have moved it to the Don't Starve Mod and Tools Subforum. Hopefully this was where you originally intended to post it. If not, let me know if the particular mod character would be specifically made for DST (if it is, ill move it there instead).
