Actually, I don't think the performances would be impacted more than proportionally to the tiles which would have to share two data ; the important thing is the number of interactions. I don't think it would be hard to have a separated liquid and gas layer. But I do think it would require a massive development time. Everything interacting with the matter would have to be updated in the code. I can't be sure on the code coverage that would be impacted, but it might be pretty big.
