draoncc
If I'm planning to melt steam, what are my options? I am aware of digging for hot materials and relocating them to an isolated chamber, or even building tiles from these specific materials. I'm looking for alternatives. Also, with the new update available to us as a beta, how will dupes deal with superheated materials? Will the heat dissipate faster? Can you still build tiles from the heated materials that retain their temperature? I'm mostly curious about my options with the beta update preview, as that is what I am playing. MoMuffins
You have limited options. Everything heats up or cools down. Your dupes will take damage from being near very hot material. They get a scalding status effect. Outside of using the lower level's heat to boil contaminated water into steam, there is no other way to boil anything. This isn't true, there are definitely methods to boil water other than using magma. I'm going to catalog a few new methods later tonight and post them. MoMuffins
That video is old and no longer applies without building with proper materials. It appears I missed the material modifier to buildings! So yes, steam is definitely possible through buildings! One thing to be careful of - I haven't tested liquid pipes yet, but if a gas changes state (from gas -> liquid) inside of a pipe, the pipe will break. The same may hold true for changing liquid to steam inside a pipe! That just means we'll have to do the final bit of heat transfer to hit the steam point outside the pipes.
