I usually have outhouse, research station, battery and hamster wheel built no later than on cycle 2. Cots can wait. And I always have a dupe with at least 8 learning. I don't care about decor expectation as he/she is not going to survive long enough for it to matter. I don't think it usually takes longer than 14-16 cycles with a single person researching.
