Water making machine suggestion.

Recommended Posts

Have a machine that creates fresh water by taking in hydrogen and carbon dioxide gasses, maybe it cools the gasses and to make it into water or something but it should output something like carbon gas or a carbon waste that could later be put into another new machine that compresses it into coal for the combustion generators. And if the machine takes in another gas besides the hydrogen or carbon dioxide then it will output contaminated water and another type of waste gas or product that can be used later in the game, a way to get around the contaminated water going into the fresh water would be to filter the outlet pipe. This would solve the problem of colonies dying due to a lack of water.

Water should be made by burning hydrogen. The reaction is rather... violent... as has been discussed in another thread, though it would be nice if say the hydrogen generator produced water as a by product.

That is true, I was just thinking of a new way to use the two gasses. I wasn't sure if it was scientifically accurate. That would be a good idea.

The biggest problem with this is that IRL, those generators are

A) Net loss for energy(You have to split the water, taking energy, as almost no hydrogen is free)

B) Require Oxygen, generally changing your dehydration issue into a suffocation issue.

That said, the Coal generator currently requires no oxygen and produces CO2 out of coal dust at the moment.

Is there not natural deposits of hydrogen gas? Because that would sort the need to split water, in turn solving problem A.

And if we had a machine that split the CO2 into oxygen and carbon we could use the oxygen from that in the creation of the water and use the carbon in a compressor to make more fuel for the coal generator and in turn get more power and CO2 from the coal generator to amke more water. I think this might solve problem B. Just an idea.

Which is why I prefaced that statement with "IRL"

the problem is that it doesn't really solve it, most of the time, you get hydrogen from electrolysis.

Fun Fact: electrolysis in game creates slightly less oxygen and slightly more hydrogen than it ought.Even if you round it, It should create 889g Oxy and 111g Hydrogen, as the amounts unrounded are 888.88repeating and 111.11Repeating.

As for a building to create Oxy from CO2, That's what the algae farm does. it's just horribly inefficient, due to the astronomical reoccuring water and algae costs(which while off topic, is really weird. Why is an algae farm destroying algae?) If not for the water costs, It'd actually be pretty efficient though, as it turns 3.33g of CO2 into 40g of O2 somehow.

If we keep with the IRL aspect, which you are 100% right about it. There is a way to manufacture Hydrogen from Methane by putting methane and steam under 3-25 bar of pressure but of course this also requires water to create the steam, therefor we would need water to create water again.

I would be much more content with the glaring issue of a perpetual motion machine that is simultaneous electrolysis and fuel cells (aka hydrogen generator, which should be re-named hydrogen-fueled generator), if the in-game description poked fun at it's own impossibility.

You fail high school chemistry, since it needs hydrogen and oxygen to produce water. tsk :D

No because we would be using the oxygen from the carbon dioxide and not oxygen directly, the carbon would be a waste product.
