Need help with clients connecting to my dedicated server.

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I have setup a dedicated server for Don't Starve Together on an Ubuntu machine.  I can successfully update the server, run mods, change the worldgenoverride.lua files, etc.  Everything is working perfectly and the server has been up for a month or two.

Here is the problem.  I got my girlfriend and both her brothers into PC gaming.  She is a more casual gamer so she's not interested in playing csgo with us so DST is our go to for us all the play together.  My girlfriend and I live together, and thus, are on the same LAN network as the dedicated server.  We have no problems playing together.  However, her two brothers live together and cannot both connect to my server.  If one of them is connected they have no problems, but when the second one connects, he has a very spotty experience.  It should be noted that he owns DST on two seperate accounts and they both suffer from the same symptoms.

Sometimes he can't see us, we move around glitchy, things we chop down are still visible on his screen, etc and so forth.  It reeks of a networking problem, but I've already tried them using +clientport with different port numbers in their steam launch options to no avail.  Unfortunately, I've searched the web for help, but all I can find is people having trouble playing on LAN.  This is not a problem at all so I can't find help.

Hopefully some genius here can help.

Thanks!

Could you elaborate on the 'spotty experience' for the second user upon connecting? Is it high ping, does he get disconnected sporadically or is it something else...? Is it always the same user? If yes, then it sounds like issues/misconfigurations with his machine.

If all four players are able to connect but the two user that connect over the Internet are having issues you can try changing the tick rate in the server configuration. If the server is able to handle it, and bandwidth isn't a problem, a higher tick rate should help running the game smoother for everybody.

The spotty experience I'm referring to is in my original post.  His game just acts strange, but it doesnt act that way if he makes his own game or plays don't starve.

I don't think tickrate would affect connections from the internet or LAN any differently.  I have another friend who has played with us so we've had 4 players before.  I use this same box for a csgo server at 128 tick with good results.  I don't believe my hardware is underperforming.

Okaay.. So the traffic is getting through. Then it shouldn't be an issue with port forwarding. Could you tell us if these issues occur/disappear immediately when the first brother (which is not haunted by strange problems) connects and disconnects, respectively? If it is certain that things only go wonky when both the brothers are connected simultaneously, that is. Also, what operating system is he using? Does this ever happen to him when he joins 'random games' online on DST?
