Dedicated Survival - Let's Go Save The World

Recommended Posts

I really enjoy survival, it's my favorite game mode.  But I don't always want to play on my own server, and I can't play 24/7.  But every time I play on a dedicated survival server, my character, my base, and everything else are always gone by the next day.  Some times we've just finished a Varg gem farm, or finally killed the Dragonfly, but as soon as 4 am rolls around, the only one still playing is an afk ghost and the server resets.  I hardly ever see a public dedicated survival server that is past the first winter without pushing it there myself.

So I wanted to give out a couple ideas for making survival or a similar mode that I think would give a better experience.  Basically, I want to see the ability for a public server to reach the late game.

1.  Timed Survival:  Survival mode, but it doesn't reset until a timer is reached (maybe always resets at that time?).  1 year survival, 3 year survival, 10 year (or maybe 24 hours, 72 hours, 1 week, 1 month?) survival, maybe something configurable by host server starts.  This may actually be pretty similar to endless, just with a ghost penalty.  This way all the dedicated survival servers aren't constantly always on day 1.

2.  Dark ritual: Special way to log out that keeps the world alive for at least 24 hours or until associated structures are destroyed.  Should require the magic tab and some rarer resources.  I think a meat effigy is about the right level for this.  Logging out kills the player, logging back in pops him out of the meat effigy.  Giants (or Griefers) could destroy your meat effigy while you're offline, which would kill you and destroy the world, plus you'd pop out with an empty inventory in a random season when you log back in, so it's not exactly easy mode.

3. Nightmare Throne: One player can sacrifice himself (dying and dropping all items to the ground) at the Nightmare Throne to power the nightmares that fuel the world and keep it alive.  The world will stay alive until at least 24 hours real time have elapsed.  Nightmare throne could be found deep within ruins, and must be powered up with bone shards, nightmare fuel, chester's eye bone, and purple gems.  Player who sacrificed himself gets to pick a new character on logging back in.  Potentially whoever takes the throne can also choose to trigger a reset.

4.  Pig King of the Hill: World timer starts at 30 days, increases by 1 day for every gold nugget the pig king drops.  Players must constantly trade with the pig king to keep the world alive.  It would take 180 meat/eggs to keep the server online for 24 hours real time.  Extremely hard for one person to do, but quite feasible for a larger group.  Various other stockpiling mechanics could include high end campfire with no burn limit (Light Up The Night), a Night Light with no max shadow fuel limit (Night up the Light), or feeding the portal gold and gems or whatever it is whoever sent you here really wants (Catchy name here!).

5.  Save/Load/Export: Players can vote to snapshot the world to a save slot at a particular point in time, and to resume one of those slots later.  This way when you and your friends are logging off for the night, you can save the world for next time.  A client side export, so that you could keep playing in the world you've been playing in by hosting it yourself or sharing your favorite worlds to a public dedicated server would also be cool.

Note that all of these come at the cost of having a group of new players unable to use a public dedicated server for a period of time because they are all dead on it (unless they want to wait for someone else to log in and resurrect them), potentially an X minute timeout and then creation of a new character (with an empty inventory and no map memory) would solve this?  I've honestly wanted something like that anyway.

My favorite would be number 3 because it brings an end game, but I think they could all be interesting.  I'd be happy to mod some of them myself (and I think #4 already exists somewhere), but they'll all have to be server side, so unless they make their way onto the Klei hosted public servers, I really won't see a benefit.

Go to Strictly Unprofessional Public.  You say 4am but you don't say where you are.  But Strictly Unprofessional Public goes past day 100 quite consistently and just had a 1120 day play through a couple weeks ago.  Regardless its a server full of late game players

Only downside: we cannot teleport griefers away anymore :/
