Ok so I am trying to find a good protection from hounds and in normal Don't Starve you can bring Rock Lobsters to the surface. I tried to do it in my DST world and they would follow me up. Can they not travel to the surface?

No followers can go from caves to the upper world/vice versa.

Really you should either fight them(multiple players split aggro after all) or fight smaller groups, get teeth, get tooth traps.

Pig houses are also useful. When red hounds come its useful to fight them in an area with an iceflingo active. keep your pig houses in its radius. Rock Lobsters were notorious in the past for overpopulating on the surface, i mean, really, really bad. look it up. they claimed to have fixed it but i will never again take that risk.

One of Maxwells quotes is a reference to this ''I banished them down here for a reason'' when he examines one.

Beefaloos are also very helpful in killing hounds, and the beefaloos reproduce. Lastly, you can outrun hounds by using a road and cane, and by doing such they can all get spread apart which makes it very easy to pick them off one or two at a time on your careful walk back home.

Some more creative strategies can use frogs and tentacles. Bees can also be used although not very effectively in my opinion but it all adds up and can help make a quick escape. Lureplants can even be used. And ofc, in the late game we have the glorious houndious shootius. but if you can get this you can probably already handle hound packs.

Just remember to use your environment and your resources, and never be afraid to look something up on the dont starve wiki. http://dont-starve-game.wikia.com/wiki/Hounds
