Is there some kind of structure combination that stops mobs but not the player?

I was doing tests with Chester, and it seems like if I can't get past, he can't get past too and instead of finding alternate way he just gets stuck, I'm trying to do that with other mobs (and by extension, Dragonfly) but it seems like I just seal myself off in the base, while it's pretty cool how I can "lock up" my base, it's pain in the back to Hammer it down and put it back down.

Is there some kind of structure that stops mobs like Hounds (and Dragonfly, I know she can't destroy so she's just stuck) but will not stop me, or do I have to rebuild it each time I move back and forth?

Build walls right next to the shoreline.  You can squeeze through but mobs cannot.  I don't think there's any other way to do this though :\

I don't have enough marble to lay out the floor to the shore, I guess an airlock will have to do it for now.

Some creatures are wider than others, and it just so happens that most of the wide ones can smash your walls at will anyways.

About the shore: Creatures will use those gaps if forced to (e.g. koalefant), but prefer to smash the walls (e.g. beefalo).

Yes, but only if there is no direct path to you, if there is a direct path then they will not agro on walls.
