Question about Hounds mass spawning

Hello,

 

I'm new to this game and I'm still trying to figure everything out. We are 2 players on my server and we were doing pretty fine surviving and building our awesome camp.

But on the evening on day 13 we got attacked by hounds. This happened once before on our first world but it was 3 of them so we could kill them fairly easy. But this time we were slaughtered because it wasn't 1-3 that came after us, it was 8 hounds against us 2! Sadly we couldn't do anything and got killed after trying to at least outrun them. That didn't work cause the night came. 

Oh well.

My point is, is this normal? Should they spawn in that quantity? It feels like, if they do spawn in that quantity then we will never be able to beat them.

Hounds are a little tricky to deal with.  Most of the time they come one by one and it's much easier that way than going against 2 or more. When that happens, you should get them near other mobs and then they get tangled up in them.  When you fight them one by one, I usually go towards them then back off before they hit me, then hit them 2 times with spear back off, then hit them 3 more times to kill them.  You can get away with hitting them 3 times but make sure your 3rd hit is the kill ie spear is 5 hits to kill a regular hound so 2 then back off then 3 like I said before.  Most other melee weapons can kill in just 3 hits.  Hope this helps.

 

As for quantity of hounds, it depends on how many players there are and what day it is.

That does sound a little high for your first wave of hounds. I usually only have 2 or 3 per player around day 10. However, there's a trick to hounds... Use beefalo herds, pigs, or duck into a swamp and watch the hounds get destroyed. Hounds switch targets after chasing you a while if there's another entity nearby.

 

And always have materials on hand to build torches and campfires at a moment's notice. You don't want a night hound attack to be an instant game-over.

Its normal, learn how to fight and use others to fight for you in Don't starve, in my case if I'm not playing with Wigfrid I always run near beeflos or pigs.

8 hounds doesn't sound normal, so it is possibly a game bug. You could just rollback the server to before the hound attack and see if the hounds come in the same quantity.

 

Also, is the amount of hounds specifically tailored to the amount of people in a server? I'm assuming so, but I have never received actual confirmation of this.

I think its normal, on Low hound settings me and my brother got attacked by 6 hounds (3 for each) and on normal settings we once got 9 hounds rather then 8 at times...and sometimes more hounds will attack one player then the other player.
