Whirly Fan could use a buff

Recommended Posts

I know I'm a little crazy for saying this but.  I have tried doing a permanent summer run in don't starve together.

Well, I succeeded.  But not because of the whirly fan,  the fan just simply does not keep you cool enough for the sticks and flower you have to invest into it.  At least with a torch in winter you can light something on fire on the ground to warm back up just enough to get to the next thing.

For summer, I'm wearing the straw hat and running with a whirly fan and still overheating.  I eventually just dropped getting the fan altogether and rushed for gold>science>endo>alchemy>thermal stone.

After that, I never used the whirly fan again.  My tests seem's rather silly really though since my permanent summer setting puts the game into the hottest part of summer FOREVER, so in a realistic situation, the whirly fan would probably do the trick.  Though, all considering, I was also playing by myself, there were no other players looting my sticks or flowers, yet I was still struggling to get sticks from saplings before they wilted.

And even after I make a whirly fan, it breaks after some time being used.

I think it could go for a bit of a better buff to keep things cool, cause right now I don't really see me ever wanting to make one.  Since in normal situations, I will have already prototyped the thermal stone and have it cooled down, so I don't see the whirly fan really being used.

Just a slight increase of it's cooling value, it's at 55 right now.  Which on a permanent summer playthrough, can't even get heat below 71C, which means I'm running around with the whirly fan overheating, it's even worse when it finally breaks.

I'm going to adjust it's value and see what numbers work better.

Edit: After some tests I realize lowering that 55 is what makes the whirly fan better.  After tests, I found 30-40 work better.  40 might be preferred as that will put temperature at 69C minimal during the hottest of summer.  Considering players will still need a light source during night this would still provide a decent challenge switching between the two items during nighttime, while also trying to gather the necessary sticks and petals to make a replacement when it breaks.

But at least with this the whirly fan could provide similar protection from heat like how torches protect against cold (Via burning something)

While on the topic though, I thought of something, it would be nice if there was a bigger better version of the whirly fan, that requires a cactus flower instead of petals.  Similar to how there's the umbrella compared to the pretty parasol.  I'll probably mod that myself though.

If you want to try the adjustment, put this into the console (default is 55)

TUNING.MINIFAN_COOLER = 40

then make a whirly fan.
