A random idea for the Bearger

Recommended Posts

So I don't know how many of you have tried fighting the Bearger out of season, but that yawn can be absolutely devastating with the range it can affect you from. For those who don't know, he will yawn when woken from his slumber, and it will in turn put any remotely nearby players to sleep, regardless of season, but out of season (Winter & Spring), he will do it even when awake as he lumbers around all groggy trying to kill you. This got me to thinking about the DST version of this giant...

See now on paper, I love the idea with the fur tufts that drop from the Bearger in the DST version, you could just follow it around if you'd rather not fight it, and collect these to make a piece of thick fur for your hibernation vest. Or for those with a trustworthy partner, you could collect and fight/kite him around, getting him to do a lot of work for you in the process (which on a side note, I ALWAYS do, sans the partner, I just use the Bearger for free AoE labor, usually for knocking trees over and keeping populations in check in the world, but I digress). Thing is though, I never see anyone actually collecting fur tufts (especially not intentionally), ever.

So one version of the idea I was thinking of involves the off season, hibernating Bearger not dropping any fur tufts, but is instead guaranteed to drop 2 thick furs since the fight becomes more demanding and involved (and if you wanted to go by some sense of real life nature, their fur would be thicker while in hibernation). Its behavior could remain as is, requiring someone / something to actually attack and wake it up first, or for a more challenging path, it could be altered to wake up if you come to close and/or make too much noise. To make it a little less of a chore avoiding the yawns, his movement speed could be slowed down a tiny bit in off-season combat.

Fighting the Bearger in Autumn would remain as is, tufts of fur dropping periodically, and a single thick fur  (plus meat) will drop on kill.

What do you think? Support? Against? Maybe spitball a few more variations around here?

Bearger a Summer giant? I almost spit and choked on my coffee! A guy with thick fur such as his being something for Summer? Out of question! He's best fitted for Autumn and not any other season. Also, I'm still up for Dragonfly being the Summer giant, I mean what's so difficult in making the dragonfly non-existant in her base at all seasons except Summer? She's not hard to fight, it's just that it's very tanky to to fight her, but Summer exclusive would bring up the heat of battle to a whole new level; literally!

Also, Beager does not hybernate during Summer; he might yawn only once, when you encounter him in summer, but afterwards he'll stay awake and he won't actually attack you after that yawn. I would agree that Bearger could have some improvements here and there, but nothing Summer related.

Though, now you got me curious: could Bearger be killed whilst he's hybernating, even by multiple players in melee and players to avoid being hit after he yawns (probably not the last bit). Bearger in hibernation is stronger than Dragonfly probably, which makes me wonder... Hybernating Bearger vs Dragonfly in DST; who would win?

That was an error on my part, I just confirmed that myself. The very few times I've actually encountered him off-season are in DST public servers since I always kill it in autumn in single-player and worlds I host in DST.

I'm hoping that my assumption that his loot table in hibernation mode is also the same since I've not seen anything to the contrary to refute it... in which case it could still be something worth considering tweaking a bit for the daredevils who want to fight him at that time.
