[Suggestion] Shared Maps Option

Recommended Posts

Hi Klei!

My friends and I were playing DST and while two of us were in the same room, one of us was not, and we felt very disconnected. One of my friends pointed out that besides periodically typing into the chat box, it felt like we might as well have been playing seperately and that it was really difficult to figure out where you are relative to one another without being able to show each other your maps.

Unless you go to a spot in person, it doesn't show up on your map and finding your friends is almost impossible unless you all travel back to a common point like the initial portal. My friends and I think it was be amazing if there was an option when starting the server to share maps and have yourself visible to the other players via the map. It would add a lot to the exploration aspect of playing together instead of just the fighting/gathering aspects and we think it would make the game a lot more fun and eliminate the feeling of 'playing alone, together' as one friend put it.

Thank you very much for reading my suggestion,

I think the idea of a cloud-served-map doesn't really fit into the base game (and there are mods that add it in) but I have thought since the beginning that it would be excellent to be able to craft a (one use?) "copy map" with everything you have explored on it. This seems to fit with the feel of the game.

Seems like this could take a bit to code, but it would be a really excellent thing to get on the radar for a future update. Devs?

Yes, this! A share-able map would be brilliant; it would allow players to share visited locations but not actively see each other on the map. I don't even like that I can see players close to me on the map. In fact, I don't even like global chat; whisper-only servers are much better. But, a share-able map for locations would be good, providing you have to actually do something to share it (like crafting for example).

After a few attempts of trying to survive in the game, me and my fiance tried a strategy that revolved around exploring before settling. It was working out pretty well until we couldn't find each other. We then spent quite some time just to find each other again and then figuring out the place we wanted to settle. That was extremely frustrating because we couldn't share what we both have discovered. Some things I've found out that we've discovered at different times, so it was double effort with very little reward. All these problems led to us not lasting for very long, so our new tactic is not even bothering discovering but rather setting camp as soon as possible.

Singleplayer and multiplayer are much different in this game and if we're going to make it a multiplayer atmosphere with allies, than the game needs to support it. Crafting a map is nothing like "Don't Starve" at all. In fact, it's more like Minecraft and in my honest opinion, it doesn't work very well. Unfortunately we never crafted maps in this game and I wish that we'll never have to. If we're allied with someone, we should know where they are on the map and we should discover what they have also discovered. We need to keep the realism out of this aspect of the game. It won't improve the gameplay, besides making it more annoying and frustrating as my prior experience has already proven.

I honestly feel your pain; it was like that in the beginning for us too. It does change and you do get better at it though. If you use the portal as a point of reference and 'up' in the standard view angle as north, a long with learning the names of map features, it makes it easier. It's more work but I find it rewarding.
