I find I spend so much of my time tracing the outlines of islands when I first visit, then exploring inwards to uncover the whole map. I find it really frustrating though when two islands are separated by a thin strip of water but you have to go a LONG LONG way around to get from one to the other. I think it would be more than fair to have to visit each bank to set a bridge as well as placing limits on how long a bridge could be. It'd be possible (EDIT: to the game devs, not modders), but very tedious and not very rewarding in comparison. Also, if you can see the other side, you can use a caves staff to blink over there.
