Paid for the game, won't start

Recommended Posts

Whenever I click on the icon it says:

steam - error

failed to start game (unknown error)

See the Steam support site for more information

But there is no information for (unknown error) on their site.

I'd either like to be able to play this game, or get my money back.  Any help?

From what I can tell, that's a Steam thing which can happen with possibly any game.

You can try right clicking the game in your Library, clicking Properties, clicking the Local Files tab then clicking the Verify Integrity Of Game Cache button for starters, maybe we can fix it nice and easy :-)

That will check through everything and re-download any game files that weren't as expected. Let us know how that goes and if it says it's gonna re-download any files and make sure at the bottom of the Steam window there are no Downloads in progress.

Should that not work, you could also try these independently:

1. Close Steam, right click a Steam icon and click Run as Administrator

2. Temporarily disable any firewall/antivirus/anti-spyware software you have running which may be blocking the game executable from running

3. Do a basic startup boot with msconfig; ideally we don't have to go down this route of troubleshooting a random background process which is stopping the game launching XD

Thank you for your assistance.  Didn't think to try them all.  Did after your advice, but to no avail.

What OS / machine configuration are you running the game on?

I'm playing on an older machine, with WinXP.  Not sure if I fail to meet the system requirements, but to be honest, I don't know what the minimum specs even are.

Hey Alteri, sorry to hear you still can't play with us!

The system requirements are almost identical to regular Don't Starve I imagine, which are here along with a little possibly relevant info regarding video card compatibility:

http://www.dontstarvegame.com/specs

Do you happen to have a folder in your Documents called Klei\DoNotStarveTogether with a log.txt in it by the way? Slim chance I figure but hey, can't hurt to ask.

Looking around on the interwebs, the only other thing people list for this Steam issue that I can really find is to uninstall the game / reinstall the game, or even Steam itself. Basically, in theory, a brand new installation of Steam should always function exactly as they designed, as should any subsequently installed games. Yeah, I know that's kind of lame but I don't know what else to suggest when this error isn't Don't Starve Together specific and also so generic.

Perhaps you could give us more info about your system specs and antivirus, etc. software and the methods used to disable them for testing? Did Steam redownload any files when you Verified? When you say tried them all, does that mean you went ahead and did a basic msconfig boot?

*edit* I don't know if it makes any kind of potential difference but you can try closing Steam and finding the Steam\steamapps\common\Don't Starve Together Beta\bin folder, right clicking the game's .exe and running that as administrator or at least directly (tbh I can't remember under which circumstances XP even has this option lol). That will open Steam then the game hopefully.

*edit2* one other little idea, with Steam closed, maybe just open DXSetup.exe from the DXRedist folder and vcredist_x86.exe from the VCRedist folder in Steam\steamapps\common\Don't Starve Together Beta and gave it a restart to make sure those are installed OK?

Hey Alteri, good news and bad news:

Bad news is the current Windows release of the game doesn't run on XP (which we don't officially support)

Good news is that the plan IS to eventually provide a version that will run on XP.  There's no exact timeline for this yet, however.

That I did not expect.

Me either, :frown:

At least now I know.  Thanks rooks.  If I can wrestle the lap top away from my wife, I'll play it there.  In the mean time, I guess I can free up the space on my HDD and (not so patiently) await my eventual system upgrade.

Thanks again outseeker!
