dnaldzin
The trader, infinite raw materials and missionsThis shady character is after something that only the island can offer, be it a item that already exists (tentacle spike, tentacle spot or other) or something else yet to be created (fear, a new plant, etc), but he doesnt dare leave his boat on the shore (or cant) to get out in land to gather himself, because of that he will trade with the player for those items he requires. As the player trade more with him, he will sell more items and buy a bigger variety of items. At some point he could set up a port somewhere and sell everything that the player could need and is not available in the world. He could also start selling stuff (flint, rocks, etc) after the player complete a mission to gather items that he wants. By doing that the player would have access to infinite resources, at a price, of course. Excess
[...] after the player complete a mission to gather items that he wants. By doing that the player would have access to infinite resources, at a price, of course. The devs, when they started making the game, added quests. But after some playtesting by external players, they found out that if you introduce quests from the beginning, once the players complete them they don't know what to do after, and quit playing. If you take out the quests completely, players tend to be more creative and have more fun in the long run.But overall, I like the idea. Perhaps he should sail along the shore randomly, so you wouldn't know exactly where to find him. mobius187
The devs, when they started making the game, added quests...Oh, are you paraphrasing the interview from Penny Arcade Report? It was an interesting read, especially how playtesters reacted to different aspects of the game... like grinding. MilleniumCount
The trader could set little shop points like a carpet with goods on it and moves it during night. So he wouldn't be at the same spot twice and the players are forced to search him.
