No Log Suits in the Inventory

I think that log suits should act like backpacks in that you can't hold them in your inventory. Currently I keep a log suit in my backpack, and then if I get it trouble I quickly equip it, then pick up the backpack later. The spontaneous loss of a few inventory spaces isn't a big deterrent for that, so it keeps me safe.

Instead, by preventing it from going into the inventory, you have three options:

1.) Carry it by hand, bringing it with you from place to place. It works, but it's difficult. That would serve as a big deterrent.

2.) Leave the backpack in exchange for defense.

3.) Waste a couple of inventory slots on the mats for a log suit, just in case. Don't forget you technically are wasting some mats too.

This would also prevent you from being able to carry two backpacks and be protected. You'd have to choose between two backpacks or a backpack and a logsuit, if you wanted to carry extra stuff with you.

Overall, it'd force a lot more choice. Right now you don't actually have to decide between defense or inventory space. I believe that the majority of people would be forced to choose between the two. After all, if I wanted to right now I'd carry two bags with me at all times. I don't, because it's a hassle. I think that same reasoning works for log suits.

This could also potentially apply to suits in the future, as that keeps the player forced to make difficult decisions.

I think the current state that you describe and want to get rid of, is fair and balanced. Because of the damage you recieve if you don't have armor on, you would "given you suggestion" be forced to chose defense over backpack at all times when travelling just in case something happens. That kind of takes something away from the sandbox aspekt. I think that you should be the master of your world and if you think it's unrealistic or unbalanced just don't do it.

My avatar title "Feeling Pretty" comes from comments I used to post about playing Wendy and wearing the Feathered Hat. It's been the only casualty of the Backpack/Log Suit struggle... as I now wear the Football Helmet instead. Sigh.
