Just got trolled...

Recommended Posts

After my first encounter with the Dragonfly and trying to fight him like normal, I decided to never do that method again.  The fact that his rage mode makes it impossible to kite him means that you will go through tons of supplies and take massive damage while trying to brute force him.

So I went the route of using a pan flute and gunpowder.  The first two encounters went pretty smoothly, though it wasn't easy to tell whether he was falling asleep from one pan flute use or not.  Still, it was a much better solution.

That was until this last attempt.  I put him to sleep, planted the 14 gunpowder, lit it, then waited for it to blow up.  Nothing happened.  He woke up a few seconds later and I tried to stop him with a new ham bat, but he ate through my defensive equipment.  When I left to get more supplies and came back, he had already despawned.

I suppose it's not really a big loss, but it still pisses me off that I wasted 14 gunpowder.  Nitre isn't that common in my world anymore and just the fact that I got screwed out of loot when I didn't do anything wrong is annoying.

His pattern is pretty straight forward, the most important thing is avoiding his ring of fires.  And the only way to attack him while avoiding the ring of fires is to allow him to attack you with his normal attack.

Normal attack

Ring of Fire

Sometimes he will hit you twice before he does his fire.  You can easily get off 2 hits before he casts his rings.  Stay close enough for him to cast his ring.  If he attacks you again instead of ring of fire, then just attack him again, and run off and wait for another opening.

Dragonfly is easier than Bearger as far as melee goes.

I swap out the walking cane between attacks, which makes him very easy.

Never had any issue with bearger or deerclops, and the moosegoose is about just as easy with the exception of the annoying "drop your weapon" move.  I can beat those guys without getting hit.  When I tried to do the same two-hit tactic against dragonfly, it just wasn't working.  He always caught up to me and snuck in an attack.  Granted I didn't think of switching out to my walking cane because I wouldn't think it would make a difference with how little time there is bewtween your second attack and when he attacks.

Everybody says that it's essentially the same strategy as the other giants, but it doesn't seem to work.  Guess I will have to wait for next summer to try it again.

The walking cane helps a great deal, giving your ample amount of time to dodge the ring of fires.

MooseGoose is just hit and run at its simplest.

Bearger is having to avoid every attack because his smash hurts a lot, and his normal attacks knocks your weapon.  With him I bait/dodge his normal attack and run in for 2 easy hits.

With Dragonfly your only opening is between his ring of fire.   You have to allow him to attack you to avoid the rings.

Soon as you avoided the rings, run in and attack twice cuz there is a wait from ring->attack->ring.

That is plenty enough time to get 2 hits in and run out.  The problem is probably that you are running off too far from him.  The rings don't have much range, gauge your safe distance.

Did they change Bearger? The last time I fought him, it went like this:

Smack with spear

Avoid Swipe

Smack with spear

Avoid Swipe

Get close

Back off for ground pound

Repeat

If he hasn't been changed, there is no way the dragonfly is easier than any other boss.
