Winter survival tips.

Recommended Posts

Wondering if someone on this board might be able to fill me in: on my world where I have 'always summer' set, if I activate the winter trap will I get a short, normal, or perpetual winter?

As if you had winter and it was Default. (Normal)

Actually, seems you get an endless winter. I had 30 days of winter before my game crashed. My last save point in that world was before I opened the chest, which was a blessing in disguise.

Location helps a lot too. You said you have 3 rabbit holes nearby, hardly seems like enough to me. The location I picked for my current survival save has like 22 holes I believe nearby. I just use them for substance in winter mostly.

If your looking for protection as well as food I highly recommend building your main base close to a "rabbit farm" but not too far from some beefalo herds. They come in very handy especially during the early stages of building. Weather it's dealing with hounds or deerclops all you need is a good herd of beefalo and your beefalo hat/bush hat. Wait till you hear the warning and go sit in the middle of the herd. Even vs. a deerclops they win, you don't have to fight at all and any beefalo that gets slaughtered becomes extra food for you, you make out like a bandit everytime! XD

Just be careful when the herd is in heat... :joyous:

That's why I don't like to build camp near beefalo; I instead try to set up near a road/path that is a heat stone's length away.  That makes it convenient to get to for manure and hound protection while avoiding getting beat up when they're horny.  Often times there are lots of rabbits in the same biome as the beefalo, so I drop a lot of traps around there too.  This way, I can make a trip out there every couple days, stay overnight (with a firepit), and get stocked up on food and manure.

Sometimes the "perfect spot" isn't available, so I've found that planning to go out to visit beefalo and bunnies gives me more flexibility on placement. Then again, I'm not a centralized base builder and like going out periodically to gather supplies.

Huh, that's not supposed to happen. Are you using a PC or PS4 platform?

I would assume that since winter and summer are similar lengths, that you don't know long or endless. Long summer is 50-60 days, so 30 of winter doesn't mean endless.

I play WX78 too, i'm on day 35, winter just ended recently. I had a crappy base, 2 heat stones, a bush hat, 1 crockpot and I only went *slighty* insane which was fixxed from the sleepy roll things.

I wasn't even upgraded, at that. Of course, I had tons of food stored up...

For a new players the basic rules of surviving winter are:

1) Have at least some cold weather clothing and the stone

2) Always carry on you resources to make a fire camp / torch

3) Get a feeling of how long your heatstone lasts and how long your winter clothes prevent freezing to plan how far you can venture from fire camp / base to pursue resources / food

4) When it's snowy / dusk / night, the cold hits much harder, strongly advice against traveling long distances in those conditions (even if you have last tier of clothing +/- dwarf star)

5) Food is important, but fuel for fire is more important, you won't starve as fast as you will freeze, on a new day always make the priority to acquire combustible for fire / warming, then food (anything will do, even pine cones).

Actually, (short of being changed in the preferences to make it longer or shorter,) all winter seasons last for 15 days.

That means the first one starts on Day 21 and is ended on day 37, not 35.

Even if you don't notice Freezing.

This is a very important distinction if you need to go after Winter-related only things, yet don't want to worry about freezing. This also is true for the first day of Winter (and sometimes part of the second.)

Ah, I didn't know that. Anyway, I still didn't need much to survive...
