Quick question about graphics card for Don't Starve

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

Looking to download Don't Starve but unsure if my graphics card is good enough. I bought my PC soley for power and didn't opt for a good card, just whatever came as standard but have no idea what the performance is like on it!

Never tested any other games on this PC so nothing to compare it against either...

Apologies if this is not the right area for posting this topic - first time posting :-)

Graphics card spec:

Name: Interl® HD Graphics 400

Chip Type: Intel® HD Graphics Family

DAC Type: Internal

Approx. Total Memory: 1696 MB

Hope that is all the information you need, and hope that somebody can help me :-)

I've also attached a screenshot of the DirectX Diagnostic Tool tab.

Thanks very much in advance.

From their Specs page

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

  • OS: Windows XP/Vista/Windows 7/Windows 8/OSX 10.7 or better/Ubuntu 12.10
  • Processor: 1.7+ GHz or better
  • Memory: 1+ gigs of RAM GB RAM
  • Graphics: Radeon HD5450 or better; dedicated 256 MB or higher (GMA Cards not supported - See below)
  • DirectX®: 9.0c
  • Hard Drive: 500 MB HD space
  • Sound: 100% DirectX 9.0c compatible sound card and drivers

For lesser machines, technically only this is an issue for many (glad I don't have it:)

Known Issues

IntelChipsets (GMA Graphics Cards)

There are some known issues running the game using Intel integrated chipsets. If your GPU (graphics card) has the letters "GMA" in the model number, we won't be able to support it.

To check what kind of graphics card you have, you can perform the following steps in Windows:

  1. Click Start.
  2. On the Start menu, click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type "dxdiag" (without the quotation marks), and then click OK.
  4. The DirectX Diagnostic Tool opens. Click the Display tab.
  5. On the Display tab, information about your graphics card is shown in the Device section. You can see the name of your card, as well as how much video memory it has.

But you should be able to run it if you don't have that specific line of integrated video card. As noted, Small graphics may help, but you may not need to run it. You can see how the game runs with and without it on.

That written, I'd advise closing down other running programs/go use a program to optimize a computer's "game mode" as noted this is a highly CPU intensive game (thus other programs can cause a slowdown this not using multiple threading. A good rule of thumb is if you can run other Steam games [beyond "Atari 2600 retro graphics" levels,] you should have no problems running this. This holds true even better if you run it standalone as it doesn't need additional resources to run the client and the game, but the difference often is minimal.)

But there can be times on any platform for low-end systems  (multiple things happening on screen and a LOT--as in hundreds of built and placed items in one screen's width--of placed items when fighting or disasters are happening) can have the rare but occasional slowing. Again, closing third-party programs may help.

Hey all!

Thanks very much for your comments.

Seems that I don't really need that great of a graphics card judging by your comments.

In response to Deacon_Blue: I have a very powerful machine (custom built for audio engineering): Intel Core i7-3770K CPU @ 3.50GHz (overclocked to 4.20GHz). 8 GB Ram, 64 bit.

So that should be all good processing powerwise :) Hopefully I'll be able to run the game with my current graphics card?

Thanks a lot guys :)

Yea you don't need a great card to run DS. The problems start occurring when people think that since it's a 2D game you can just run it with any crappy card. Then those same people underestimate the power needed to run the game and get disappointed as a result.
