Using Existing Content in New Ways

Recommended Posts

To my surprise, I've realized that what I want for this game the most isn't really new content. The game already has plenty of content, but it doesn't seem to take full advantage of it.

Er, to see what I mean, look at adventure mode. It did add some new stuff, but it mostly takes advantage of things that were already in the game. It gives the teleportato central role. It messes with world generation by both adding more random elements and by creating specially designed worlds. The game already had all the creatures, biomes (well, maybe not the chess biome), etc. but adventure mode used them in new ways.

What I'm saying is that, even with adventure mode, there's still a lot more that can be done with the content that's already in the game. What would I like to see? I'm glad you asked, hypothetical person!

More worlds like the adventure mode ones. I'm sure that there are more world designs that would yield a unique experience than the 6 that were made for adventure mode. For example, I know some people have suggested that there be an adventure mode world that integrates caves. Also, the option to play these worlds in survival would be nice.

More customization for world generation. Currently, even though we can change a lot of options, customization is still pretty limited. It would be cool to customize the amount of each biome that can appear, or to have very few (but not none) of something spawn, or to customize caves in any way at all. The latter would potentially make caves more appealing for people who don't like them. For example, setting some vital resources to appear a lot in caves and making them scarce on the surface would make caves a part of the survival experience. It would also be fun to be able to make cave stuff be generated on the surface, and surface stuff in caves.

More random elements for world generation. What if the settings in the world generation options could be randomized? It would be cool to be able to step into a new world and not know what it's going to throw at you. Chances are, you'd have to face challenges you never dealt with before.

There are a lot of things that could be added to the game without having to create new content; I'm sure there's more than the suggestions I posted. I don't mean that adding them would be effortless, but I would very much like to see the content we have be used to its full potential. As far as new content is concerned, I'd enjoy it, but it can wait.

hi guys this is my fist post here, and i would like to support the addition of a "random" setting in the world creation menus...that way we can set the individual settings to random and who knows what will happen? maybe no deerclops will spawn at all? maybe it will be a long long winter and short summer? maybe all the bunnies are gone this time? maybe there will be TONS of spiders, everywhere?

i understand that a true random on some attributes would make an unpleasant playthrough, but youd never know what you would get!

i propose a single MACRO random button that affects all attributes, as well as individual random buttons placed next to all changeable settings in world creation mode

thanks for this great game, Klei!

You should really try playing the Default + preset. That's the closest to Adventure Mode a Sandbox world can get right now.

I really should. But, all my save files are filled and it's been a while since I've played for real. I'm beginning to get a list of things I should do next time I play. :/

Yeah, a random setting is something I've been wanting to see for a long time now. And being able to set individual options to random is a good idea.

Now, a 'random all' setting wouldn't necessarily have to be completely random; it could be 'smart' about it to try to preserve a relatively constant level of difficulty. For example, if something that is, overall, negative (like hounds), was set to more, then something that's positive overall (like pigs) could be set to more as well. This might help stabilize the difficulty a little, so you would be less likely to end up with ridiculously easy worlds or impossibly hard ones.

Of course, it wouldn't be perfect. I mean, does having more carrots really make up for grass being scarce? Or is having a lot of berry bushes really offset by having the deerclops appear more often?

i also just realized today when starting a new world that we really cant alter any of the cave characteristics in the world setup mode, which is a shame..

love the game, already happy with the amount of customization they let us have as is- i only wonder why we cant alter any of the cave stuff? like: more less rabbits, green mushrooms, default cave "insanity" levels, like make a cave always in full on "insane" mode where the shadow creatures continually rip from the underworld...

make it so there are no resources at all to get other than rocks, like no trees or berries or carrots, grass etc etc

that way its a bit harder to get bunnymen to follow you, youd have to bring carrots in from outside, or seeds and set up a farm and hope for carrots heh heh

anyway, maybe there is a way and i am missing it?
