the truthseeker
Klei recently made changes where the "Game is Afoot" now lasts 10 winter days. While annoying if you get it as your first world, it was doable. You get a chest with a winter hat, some flint and some logs. That is, unless you get the "other starting chest" option, which I thought they would remove when they extended the winter duration. They did not. You get 10 rot and some random blueprints (I just got Bat Bat...twice...) You have absolutely no heatstone, no hat or body cold gear and (unless lucky with the blueprints) no way to craft them. It's bad enough trying to make an ax, let alone gathering more stuff to survive. Sure, I know the lighting items with a torch and/or fires, but it seems I can barely get enough supplies and food, let alone search for gold if I am playing one of the lower-health characters (Wes, WX unupgraded.) I was even unlucky for days and didn't find enough rocks so I couldn't make a fire pit. What tips are suggested so I don't die from exposure in several days or burn through all my resources staying warm in this? And if Klei is reading this, consider removing this Rot/Blueprints variant if you make winter last 10 days! it was doable with a starting fire and one night of winter, but not that doable with 10 days and no extra logs/flint. TeoSS69
No idea really. I guess you could survive 3-4 days with just firepits. But then you absolutely need warm clothing or a heat stone...

But then you absolutely need warm clothing or a heat stone...*sigh* yeah, lasted 4 days before dying. Couldn't leave the area far enough and never found enough stone...actually just found more rocks and couldn't get more burnables in time and the exposure finished me off. Was hoping for more options quickly, but moot point now. Any future advice from everybody is appreciated, or if none pops up here, I'll make a "remove this option" begging plea suggestion on the feedback thread. Finally a situation where playing as Woodie is actually useful.

I was playing some worlds that I set to starting season to winter with long seasons. What I found to work best in the very beginning is to "clear-cut" as you go along. What I mean by that is that you only move a screen or two before lighting a campfire and then clearing the screen around you. The key to this is patience and to not over-extend yourself. Always put your fire by some trees, always run out from your fire and then gather items moving back towards it. Now I was surviving 50 days of winter doing this, 10 days is very doable. I'll post up some more specific info if you'd like.

(But really 2 Bat Bat for starting blueprints? The game wanted me to assume the position alright....)
