John sighs.

"It's complicated. But... It was me. But now we're different people. It happened when I signed the letter. Let me explain."

He takes a deep breath, in order to calm down.

"When I got the letter, it wasn't signed. I woke up with it in my hand, attached was a pin. I heard in my head what to do. I stabbed my finger, and wrote my name in blood. Jack. And the next thing I knew... I was standing above my bloody parent's corpses, holding this."

He holds his hand out, and a bloody spear flies to it.

"What? Oh, nonononono. You misunderstand."

He puts down the spear.

"That was Jack. I'm John. See, when I signed the pact... It added a new personality to me, and pushed out the old one. The new personality was one of evil, of malice. It wanted to kill for the sake of killing. But me... I'm the person before the killing. Jack is the one who did the killing."

He looks over at Azreth.

"I was cursed... For Jack to show up every now and then. He would try and kill people. But Azreth and Shard broke the curse. He cured me."

John sighs.

"I didn't mean to scare you... It's a story, remember? It's what happened in the past, not the present."

John nods, and shivers, remembering the scene.

"So, I'm conscious again, and I see what I've done. My eight year old mind... Can't really comprehend it. My brother comes into the room, after all the ruckus. As you can guess, he was horrified. I tried to speak, but no words came out. He ran out of the house, straight to authorities, and reported me. I wouldn't have done any different. I was shipped to America, and put in a mental asylum. I stayed there for another two years, until I was about ten. They kept trying to get Jack to show himself. I tried to warn him, and I tried to keep Jack from coming through, but I couldn't hold him forever."

John hangs his head, ashamed of himself.

"Everyone in the asylum died that day. They were all murdered. The policed arrived, and there was a long argument of what to do with me. Some said to give me the death sentence. Most argued that I was just a kid, and shouldn't be put down. I was transported to a high security prison. For their sake, I wish they had killed me. Jack broke free, after four years of imprisonment. There were no survivors. I woke up on a beach, far from where I was before. The news had traveled, but no one recognized me. I started over, with a new life. I lived in the orphanage the next four years, until I was eighteen. I managed to keep Jack down. And then things started looking up."

Double post forgive me just wanted to finish the story before I forgot...)

John smiles, remembering the fond memories he was about to speak of.

"A lot of things went right in my life, after I made my new Persona. I became John Polak, the last name of one of my neighbors back in Bristol. I got a job, and made some friends. Eventually... I got married. I bought a house, and had kids. Twin daughters, they were named Wendy and Abigail. I made sure to treat them right, not like how my parents treated me. And surprisingly... For a while... Things got even better."

John clenches his fists as his smile fades, as if the following memories were not quite as happy as he had made them to be.

"I received a letter from my brother. You see, I had been trying to contact him ever since I got to the orphanage, sending him letters every day. When I started living my life, I sent one every week. I was afraid he would never forgive me. But I got that letter... And it said he was coming to visit me. He was to take a boat to the south, then take a train up north where I was."

John sighs, and leans back, his eyes filled with sorrow.

"I was elated, as you might imagine. My brother, after all those years, forgave me for the unspeakable. I could never had forgiven anyone like me if I was in William's position. But... But he never arrived. News came to us, news of a train crash. I... I was devastated. My family tried to comfort me, 'It's alright' They would say. 'He forgave you in the end' They would say. But... Something inside me stirred. Something that I had sealed away for all those years. Jack. He had risen, taking advantage of my grief. He... He..."

John's breaths come in sobs and gasps, as he wipes some tears away from his face.

"He murdered my wife, and one of my children, Abigail. Wendy, bless her soul, managed to escape the house before I could get to her. I was back to square one. Everything I had made for myself... Everything I had achieved... Washed away like the tide. In that fateful instant. I had nothing; no brother, no family, no friends, no nothing. Strangely enough, Wendy didn't report me to the authorities. The police never came for me. I got a new job, but I couldn't find a decent one. I continued wandering south, searching for anything. Jack didn't come out again, and I wandered for a year. And then I found a poster."

John's voice levels out, and his breathing becomes more regular. He still seems pained, but to a lesser degree.

"'The great Maxwell' It said. It was a poster for the circus. But this Maxwell fellow... He was William's splitting image! It directed me further south, the tip of America in Florida. I was quite far away, but managed my way over there anyway. If William had a son, I felt obligated to find him. The closer I got to my destination, the more abundant the posters became. However, being fairly money less, I was forced to travel on foot. And then I arrived. When asked, people directed me to a hotel on the top floor. They said the lad had disappeared, gone without a trace. I barged into Maxwell's room, and the surroundings were tattered. The first thing that came to my sight... Were letters. Addressed to me. They were written by William, and fairly recently at that. After looking around the room, I had reason to believe that William and Maxwell were the same person. The next thing I noticed... was that there seemed to be a chamber in the fireplace. I crawled in, looking at the room, when I heard Jack whispering to me. He said that William was very much alive, and trapped at that. He told me of the book lying on the ground. Without hesitation, I picked it up, and the next thing I knew, giant hands of shadow were upon me. They dragged me into some strange dimension, which would be this place."

He sighs, concluding the story.

"And I've been here ever since, all those years ago..."

(You betcha! The misadventures of Jack Carter...)

"Yeah..."

John hugs Cake back, with a slight blush.

"You know, I don't tell my stories to some people. Mostly because their stories aren't up to snuff."

He laughs weakly, trying to perk himself up. He seems to imitate someone with a higher pitched voice.

"Oh, one night I didn't have lobster for dinner! It was horrible!"

Shard glances around. She is tired still, her mind still not up to speed on everything that had come to be throughout the last few... months? She isn't sure, but all the fighting and the action is making her confused. She still hopes, however, that all will be fine. It isn't hard to control her hound side, as far as she knew. And tonight... well, tonight, she was going to turn back into a human until the morning. If she controlled her transformation, she could stay human for at least a day. She flutters her wings softly.
