The Shopkeeper

Recommended Posts

You return to your camp after another difficult hound attack. You limp slightly. One of the blighters got in a nice chomp on your leg. As you reach the relative safety of your wood Walsh, you notice something unusual. The fire pit at the center of the camp is roaring and a tall figure is standing next to it. You grip your spear. So he's finally decided to show his face again. You creep closer to the fire, eager for some vengeance. But to your dismay, it's not Maxwell. This man is wearing a red coat and is carrying a large umbrella. The umbrella keeps his head out of view as you stand next to him. "So this is the new pawn..." He mutters, his voice barely a whisper, nearly lost in the wind. You glare at him. "What do you want?" You ask angrily. If he's here for food, he's getting chased out. You barely have enough food for yourself as it is. "I'm not here for food. I'm here to help you." Help you? A likely story. "Well, someone has to play the other side of the board after all." Other side of the board? What is he talking about? "Consider this a free sample."He vanishes in a puff of smoke, leaving a little umbrella. "An umbrella? He calls that helping?" You mutter. Suddenly, a crash of thunder cascades through the camp and a dense downpour ensures. You huddle under the umbrella, trying desperately to stay dry. Maybe this gift wasn't useless after all.

Nice writing. Great use of the shopkeeper's looks as a mystery-inducing factor. Congrats.YOU ARE LEAVING SPOILER-FREE ZONE, CONSIDER YOURSELF WARNED.YOU ARE LEAVING SPOILER-FREE ZONE, CONSIDER YOURSELF WARNED.YOU ARE LEAVING SPOILER-FREE ZONE, CONSIDER YOURSELF WARNED.YOU ARE LEAVING SPOILER-FREE ZONE, CONSIDER YOURSELF WARNED.This got me thinking: What if the Shopkeepers are re-used as "the ones" Maxwell talks about? If they wanted to replace Maxwell, wouldn't the best decision be helping Wilson in his way, just like this one does in your story? Questions, questions and more questions...
