It's a pretty handy tool, especially for base building and ruins clearing. Having the equivalent of 8 hammers worth of durability for smashing makes a pretty major impact in day to day building, and it's pretty much the only tool you need to full clear the ruins (maybe with a lazy forager to tack on for cave holes). Apart from the brightshade sword, it's the item I typically use the most repair kits on.
