I haven't seen a lot of people talking about this, but here are my findings.
These tests were done on a default world, I just spawned in from the portal and sent the drones out immediately without moving myself at any point.

The image of the left shows the different drone ranges, the inner square is without any rangeboosters, the outer is the range with 7 rangeboosters. Notice that there is a spot on the upper right I was forced to explore diagonally, as there wasn't enough range to reach it from where I was standing.

The image on the right is the full map on the same position, you can see that I wasn't really centered but it was still enough to reach ~95% of it.

I don't know when they added this interaction between the circuit and roto-mapper (I saw the extended range for Jimmy in the patch notes, but no Scott mentions, maybe it was always a thing? idk).

With this knowledge, I think the roto-mapper is in a pretty good spot. One way to use this change is by having a chassis in the middle-ish of the map with 7 rangeboosters (as you can see in the examples 7 was overkill, so maybe 6, 5 or even less) that you swap to every time you notice your drones have stopped, adjust them quickly, then go back to whatever you were doing on your other chassis.
