Hey guys,

I don't play beta but I acively watch related streams. Currently I feel like I luck the info on how Roto-Mappers could be used.

My idea is if I picked the skills, I could create drones almost immediately after spawning and send them in some direction per drone, so map will be discovered while I'm exploring the different direction. This will be great for exploration early an mid-game.

However I've noticed that:

1) the craft recipe is quite costly (however it requires a Science machine only, it would be nice to make something lightweight and cheaper to start exploration almost immediately)

2) it seems you need to control your robot somehow - does it take your time? I mean will I lose the exploration on foot because I have to monitore these drones constantly? Maybe at least it moves faster than character inself to nake it viable?

3) it has radius - what does radius applies to? Can I send the drone out of radius to simply lose control over it but still receive map exploration? Can I walk away out of radius while still having the benfits of map discovered? Is the radius enough to perform early game map exploration efficiently?

4) drones limit - is there any? If so, can I somehow kill one of my drones which is out of my radius? If no, it would mean I have to repeat my drone path which makes no sense in terms of effort.

Could someone please share their investigations in this topic? I will appreciate the videos. If we're unable to make scouting with these drones efficiently, what's the purpose of these drones then? Do you guys plan to use it somehow?

2 you control where the drone goes to by opening you map and selecting the drone to go somewhere it's pretty slow

3 there is a radius around the player and the drone route can only be inside of that. The drone also needs to be inside of the range to be able to be controlled so if you walk far enough away you can't control it.

4 maximum drone limit is 2 per shard i think

sad, based on this reply it seems quite useless? I still wonder about how it's planned to be used in practice, it terms of time economy. E.g. if I want to locate Crab King, I craft 2 drones, send them somewhere, then if I walk away I can't craft more drones - I have to sail to my drones (no time economy). If they're slow I would rather to simply eplore by myself.

Dear Klei, isn't it an issue? Maybe making Roto-Maper drones cheap (like made from sticks and grass) and using time to live instead of a radius will be better? This way there'll be no need in drones per shard limit (if they're self-descructable), no need to pick your drones again / stay around / control it?

Or make them faster than average beefalo speed / able to auto-comeback to WX-78 despite of radius after the dedicated point is revealed while also exploring map which can actually help to explore even more.

I want to use these drones but if they're so inefficent than they seems like fillers cause there're so many other useful things...

Everything sounds different in concept than in practice, especially with something new like this. If you are curious about the performance of things like the roto mapper and how it good it is at its job, your best bet is to give it a try if you can, or at the very least watch them in practice. It’s what the beta is for, after all.

That's what I've asked beta-players for, if they can share the videos which all these concepts described. I have an image how I'd like to use it, but so far the information I receive is quite... not promising. And unfortunately most streamers are focused on another things like new modules, fights, extra body etc., while exploration is not covered in a way I would give it a try if I'd play beta.

how do the drones work if you go into the caves? do you have to make a choice between using two on the surface or splitting them between caves and forest? It would make sense if you had 2 on the surface and 2 in the caves but I don't remember it working like this when i played the beta. I don't think this should be a decision we have to make - we should get drones in both areas if it doesnt work like this already. Or perhaps you could recall the drones when within visual range and redeploy them in the caves (personally i wouldnt want to feel forced to get both skill tree points just to explore both caves and surface effectively)

So I've been wondering about this the from my play testing on my own server the drone I'm able to control the drone from anywhere on the map not just nearby but it needs to be updated on where to go every so often.

Each shard has it's own limit as far as I understand. So if you can have 2 in caves and 2 in forest. But people say drones despawn if you switch the chard (e.g. forest drones will despawn if you enter caves)

I think they stop existing when you leave the server, but they'll come back with you as soon as you re-enter. I've been traveling between the surface and caves a ton and my drones are still around since day 2 of the world.

So they kinda reappear if you leave caves but are lost when you leave the server?
