Jakepeng99
I have heard from smart coders that the main reason spiders lag is because they constantly look for food on the ground. Wont it just be easy to make friendly spiders not eat food to reduce lag? Then, rework the way mobs look for food on the ground, or give it a bigger cool-down. 2 Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/169394-make-webber%E2%80%99s-spiders-not-eat-off-the-ground-to-fix-lag/ Share on other sites
AuRuS
Even though I'm studying the IT and I do understand the code, in moments like these I always think to myself that the people that develop those systems cannot be this dumb and it's gotta be something deeper than this, like I'm sure someone has already came up with this idea and it turned out to destroy something else entirely as it sometimes happens in lengthy spaghetti projects like DST If it was that simple I'm sure it would have been fixed within an hour of someone posting about this problem Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/169394-make-webber%E2%80%99s-spiders-not-eat-off-the-ground-to-fix-lag/#findComment-1847854 Share on other sites
Bumber64
Webber's spiders not eating is a gameplay change that means you don't have to worry about them stealing pig skin or deerclops eyeball. Even if Klei went with that, it has to compete with issues like server shards hurting performance, and (previously) lunar hail and rot everywhere. Not to mention non-performance bugs that show up in every update. ("Stopped Pearl from crashing the game when you give her a gift while she's feeling extra crabby.") They'll probably address it during Webber skill tree, but more like "Optimized spider food checks, and it happens less frequently now". You can already stop them with the web by whistle, it just makes it less annoying and gives everyone less of a reason to kick Webber players form the server who want to play Webber. 5 hours ago, Bumber64 said: Webber's spiders not eating is a gameplay change that means you don't have to worry about them stealing pig skin or deerclops eyeball. It affects everyone in the server. ZeRoboButler
I always thought that the reason that certain mobs had certain behaviors was to make them feel more like an actual creature. It is fitting that the spiders would be hunting for food on the regular but, if spiders where to stop hunting for stuff to eat when they are walking around I could live with that. I would only assume that some system could be put in its place similar to the hounds and vultures we got, the spiders would instead after killing something attempt to eat the corpse of said creature, perhaps leaving something behind or nothing at all depending on the creature. (bones for larger creatures would be nice) 1 Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/169394-make-webber%E2%80%99s-spiders-not-eat-off-the-ground-to-fix-lag/#findComment-1847966 Share on other sites

Probably because it's a game that's been going for many years and has had tons of updates, which tends to make the code into messy spaghetti. Just ask the Team Fortress 2 devs. Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/169394-make-webber%E2%80%99s-spiders-not-eat-off-the-ground-to-fix-lag/#findComment-1848005 Share on other sites
hoxi
They already optimized the brain food searching for spiders and a few other checks that were slow, which helps, but isn't the main source of lag when there's many spiders (it was just adding to it unnecessarily when it could've been as it is now). The topic about spider food search specifically should be buried as it's been addressed (but not that they're still very laggy). They're aware of the biggest sources of it though, it's just a matter of time for them to tackle it because it's not as simple as the food search optimizations. 12 hours ago, DegenerateFurry said: Probably because it's a game that's been going for many years and has had tons of updates, which tends to make the code into messy spaghetti. Just ask the Team Fortress 2 devs. I can hardly say that about DST except for a few specific bits here and there. On the other hand, Don't Starve, especially Hamlet? Yeah absolutely. 3 1 Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/169394-make-webber%E2%80%99s-spiders-not-eat-off-the-ground-to-fix-lag/#findComment-1848030 Share on other sites
