HERE ME OUT:

In an older Rhymes with Play, around the time of the Koalephant corpses being introduced and the Hunts getting a semi-makeover, it was said that the corpse at the time had a double purpose, being a bit of world building, and acting as a method to split the fight. Take on the Varg as the hound summons prioritized the corpses.

With this said, I feel like Vargs should also preserve nearby corpses like Buzzards do. Or, at least, the ones they directly attack and kill.
I was a bit hesitate to make this post with the paranoia surrounding Buzzards currently, but here's my thought process on why this might actually be beneficial.

Firstly, Vargs are hunt exclusive, and you know where they are/spawn. They're not like Buzzards, they don't actively chase you down.
Secondly, that same purpose as mentioned above, letting corpses stick around near them would give Hounds more things to focus on other than the player. I think this would mostly be good for earlier players who have less things to deal with large hordes.
They're half as destructive, I think this would also be a really good way to ease in the hunter/scavenger/corpse dynamic earlier into the game. Ideally normal Buzzards would do the same, too.

I do have something to add to this, while Vargs could preserve corpses just by being nearby, because as you said, it'd lead to their hounds getting distracted (and personally I think it'd make sense with how they can spawn in). Hounds and Varglets should probably be able to cause it as well on killing creatures directly, at that point they're probably gonna eat the meat dropped (if there's any), so it'd add up to how they hunt and eat, for a little more world building.

Also funnily enough, normal Buzzards, while they support this whole system (including some differences in behavior compared to mutated ones), aren't set up to make use of it at all, or to preserve corpses when nearby, and I feel like that should probably get changed? Maybe to be less aggressive (as in, the mechanic that triggers the corpse mechanic, but also how they behave compared to their mutated counterparts).

EDIT: just realized, Depth Worms could also make use of this system to make it work in the caves, it'd make sense for them. They would need functionality to look for corpses, and also for chomping on them though, but it'd fit with them I think.

I'm certain its coming, its probably put aside for minor art touch ups regarding the eating anim and their typical build. Or just didn't make it in time. Crazy opportunity to pass up.
