dudewhothings
with the discovery of 3 remains of Ancients, something has been bugging me a lot. We see that they, indeed, are bug-like, but something has been bothering me... mainly their mouths. We see on the mouth of one that they have a mouth, but I don't see them being shaped like the mouths of a usual insect. They have no mobile mandibles, at least from what I can see, meaning that they either have lower jaws, or they do not. Usually skeletons in DST have full anatomy, especially the skeletons of dead creatures, but the skeletons of the Ancients... confuse me, primarily the Visionist's. I simply wish to know if the Ancients did have lower jaws, or if their heads functioned like those of insects. It's mostly to finally appease the autistic interest I have for the Ancients' anatomy. I love creatures like this, and that one little detail of how their mouths work would be the final piece of the puzzle. If anyone knows whether they do have jaws or not, please let me know. 2 Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/168071-ancient-anatomy-after-ancient-echoes-spoiler/ Share on other sites
Ridley
It is hard to say, but none of their art depicts them with mandibles. That doesn't mean they don't have mandibles given that there is some artistic expression and a nightmare fuel transformation. My best guess is they look mostly like what you see in your picture of the 3 ancients and wear masks like the ones we loot off them. Some kind of roach people who make toilet shaped fountains of knowledge. Also, I didn't realize you can see the causes of death if you look close enough at these 3 ancients. Pretty cool, Klei. -Variant
Ancient anatomy varies a TON. Some probably did, others most likely didn't. Using Shadows may not be the best reference, but some like... Ancient Herald show more human-like mouths. Same for Charlie's weird Ancient form in the last short. Others could be more like the Mants from Hamlet. Oh, and there's also an entire sub-species of them lacking heads entirely, with their stomachs on their mouths. I'm most interested in those! 1 2 Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/168071-ancient-anatomy-after-ancient-echoes-spoiler/#findComment-1836574 Share on other sites
