I was going post this in the bug tracker forums, but I didn't know if it counted or not, since it seemed to be more of a server issue on Klei's part.

Self-explanatory. Shard failed to load for caves on every official Klei server. It's been pretty funny, (since lightbulbs are the most valuable thing on dedis, + this is an update FOR the caves), but I think people're ready to have them back again.

Please look into it!

Steps to reproduce:

1 - Login to DST.

2 - Join a Klei Dedicated server.

3 - Be in awe at the lack of cave sinkholes!

4 - Cry a little.

5 - Turn off your computer and go for a nice walk to get your mind off of it.

I play on a set of 3rd party dedicated servers having the same issue, I assumed it was on their end and since nobody else was talking about it I wasn't gonna bring it up. But seeing as this may be an issue with the game in general... 

Also to note, on these servers the caves *do* work, but the shards are disconnected, so we come back after the updated and half of us are stuck in caves, and half on the surface! Also note I'm fairly certain this means the whirlepool couldn't spawn, as we spent our time searching for it above ground as we could not venture below.

Oh wow, that's super interesting and weird, lol. Thanks for the info! I did some solo testing on a private world and a dedicated world, and I hadn't had any issues. It's probably some specific thing. Wish I had logs from the bugged servers to make a proper bug report.

The way caves interface with the migration portal needs to have the shard name as "Caves" for the entrance to sync up in the server.ini. This is fixed on the Klei Official servers waiting for a rollout restart to finish when players are no longer actively playing on a region.

All opened cave entrances have vines over them which prevent me from entering Cave shard:

Supposedly the big whirpool should be here (I navigated to it via commands) but it doesn't exist, but still shows up on the minimap:

Edit: I made copies of this world before launching it after the update. In all the copies whirpool tries to place itself into the same place and seems to fail every time. When I rollback the world and check the cave to see the location of the wormhole, it retrofits into the different place each time. How is the location of the whirpool chosen for the retrofitting and how can I affect it?

Here's what I also tried. Opening a previously closed cave entrance works and correctly loads me into the cave shard. I can then safely exit it through the known previously opened entrance but it only works one way - upon bringing me back to the surface I spawn near the entrance sealed with vines again. All the entrances that were previously opened in this world before this update now forever sealed with vines, but any entrance mined post update doesn't get sealed with vines.
