I think hard armor hats should be able to negate 100% of the damage from falling items during earthquakes, just like the Hardwood Hat does. Because Boulderboughs will bounce on entities wearing hard armor hats, there’s no reason not to allow hard armor hats to 100% withstand damage from falling items in earthquakes.

Since the Hardwood Hat only has 70% protection and 262.5 HP, most Woodie players don’t bother crafting it and instead choose the Football Helmet like other characters do. I hope the Hardwood Hat can be buffed so that it is classified as a hard armor hat and can bounce Boulderboughs away.

To sum up, I hope all hard armor hats can bounce Boulderboughs and fully negate damage by falling items from earthquake, and the Hardwood Hat can be classified as a hard armor hat.

Hardwood hats protecting 100% from earthquake debris is one thing. Themm 100% negating a boulderbough does not really make sense from a game perspective nor real life one. The sheer size of the boulder bough would easily snap your neck on impact/squash you dead. From a gameplay perspective, removing the risk from this with something as cheap as a day 1 item doesn't make any sense, feels too easy to exploit with being able to mass produce them for pigs/ bunnymen  to do all the work for ya no risk.

Why would the other items protect you? Magic?

Why do we care if the boulderbough falls on pigs? They're disposable. Bunnymen even regen health, but don't chop trees AFAIK.

The thing you're missing with worrying about Hardwood Hats is that the Codex Umbra exists.

I was gonna be against you until I read the pigs. I don't know, on one hand, it's character specific craft, and this character's strength is gathering resources. On the other hand, you can hire many pigs whose radius of work is ginormous and equip them cheaply.

I haven't played the beta, so my opinion depends on if Bearger can help you harvest them. If he can, I'd think making the hat hard won't change anything much. If he loses health by the boulders falling, yeah keep it relatively expensive to make a dozen of hired muscle inmune to the falling rock.

I don't think they can grow gems on the surface? It's just ruins and fumarole biomes, so no Bearger. GDW eats drops and despawns, so that's right out. It deliberately stuns Ripple. (How long?) Damaged rooks, maybe? Are they fast enough to avoid damage?

You'd need to build pig houses in the caves and provide them with light so they don't panic. (Hardwood hat excludes miner hat.) They'll refuse to work and attempt to return home when the time is "evening" or "night" regardless of lighting. Sounds really cumbersome compared to merms or shadow servants.

Actually I was trying this out a bit ago and I don't believe Pigmen ever consider the caves daytime in DST, thus leading to them never being able to chop at all.

not sure by what metric you are basing most Woodie players on, but plenty of woody players i see in public games including me makes wooden hats. they are extremely cheap in the early game and way easier to get than football helmets and are great for thinning out the damage of your chest armor. that being said I will unapoligetically  take any buffs to Woodie

That's correct. I did try on my caves only world during March - April

Is TheWorld.state.isday always false in caves? There's a check for not TheWorld.state.iscaveday in the pig's night state, which leaves the implications:

1. Pigs treat the entire caves like night during the day.
2. Pigs treat the entire caves as pitch black during the evening and night, ignoring light sources.

It looks like it might be intended behavior? Pigs just aren't comfortable in the caves. Wiki probably needs updating on this.

Yeah, caves never update the following world state variables:

  • phase
  • isday
  • isdusk
  • isnight
  • isfullmoon
  • isnewmoon

Instead they update they following:

  • cavephase
  • iscaveday
  • iscavedusk
  • iscavenight
  • iscavefullmoon
  • iscavenewmoon

Non-cave shards update all of the above.

Caves also initialize phase as "night", isday to false, and isnight to true.

Yeah, that's pretty much on point. They have a lot of behavior nodes that work regardless (like combat, panic, etc), with the day and night nodes being the last ones, depending on which is applicable (which in caves means it's always the night one that runs).

It's impossible for them to do chop actions to help because that's unique to the day behavior node, same with following their leader if they have one.

You can at most make them follow you if you keep a light source (though if they find a static light source, they'll likely stick to it), and they'll help in combat. You just can't use fires or campfires as light sources (they won't fall asleep while they have a leader, unless they're close to a fire or campfire while not in darkness).

Yes; the materials do not appear to have any direct real world analog so there are fewer restrictions on their properties.

Shadow: Thulecite Crown, Dreadstone Helmet

Lunar: W.A.R.B.I.S. Head Gear
